Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 54th annual Circle K NHRA Winternationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Jonnie Lindberg Runs 5.598/263.15, Now #2; Best prior run: 12.943/75.66, Was #13

3:13 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 64 degrees, relative humidity 48 percent, barometer 29.01 inches, adjusted altitude 1,855 feet, track temperature 76 degrees.

Jay Payne is number one and No Bump Spot.

Lindberg keeps the tires stuck this time and runs a career best ET and MPH. Thats the new number two spot too!

Jonnie Lindberg's incremental times: 60ft-0.949 sec., 330ft-2.533, 660ft-3.731/207.50 mph, 1,000ft-4.742.


Left Lane: Nick Januik Runs 5.599/255.87, Now #3; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Terry Ruckman Runs 9.541/89.28, Now #14; Best prior run: 10.317/84.60, Was #13

Another career best ET and speed! Januik is straight and true right on down the track.

Ruckman problems continue, as the car is slowing right after the 100 foot mark.

Nick Januik's incremental times: 60ft-0.950 sec., 330ft-2.482, 660ft-3.688/204.82 mph, 1,000ft-4.721.

Left Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 5.625/257.19, Now #5; Best prior run: 15.772/56.15, Was #15
Right Lane: Shane Westerfield No Time, Now #14; Best prior run: 8.803/96.77, Was #13

Westerfield double pumps and jumps the lights. He shuts it off and is pushed back.

Woznichak puts the power to the ground this time and makes a clean pass into the new #5 spot.

Mark Woznichak's incremental times: 60ft-0.958 sec., 330ft-2.511, 660ft-3.722/204.76 mph, 1,000ft-4.753.

Left Lane: Ulf Leanders Runs 5.800/257.09, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.980/113.36, Was #13
Right Lane: Bernie Harrington Runs 11.605/64.56, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.939/237.00, Was #12

Harrington's car moves hard towards the wall at the green and he has to lift.

Leanders gets to the finish line under power this time and moves four spots up the ladder.

Ulf Leanders' incremental times: 60ft-0.966 sec., 330ft-2.642, 660ft-3.897/201.58 mph, 1,000ft-4.932.

Left Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.622/251.02, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.833/240.51, Was #10
Right Lane: Bret Williamson No Time, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.880/253.85, Was #12

Williamson is shut off after the burnout and is pushed back.

Thompson puts down the power and moves up the ladder five spots on a clean and straight pass.

Clint Thompson's incremental times: 60ft-0.964 sec., 330ft-2.507, 660ft-3.711/205.98 mph, 1,000ft-4.742.

3:26 p.m. The starting line crew is out in force wiping up a bunch of oil in the right lane. Lots of wiping, scraping, and washing!

Left Lane: John Lombardo Jr. Runs 13.280/61.33, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.754/256.94, Was #9
Right Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 5.659/259.06, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.878/255.15, Was #11

3:44 p.m. Well, that took a while! Back to qualifying...

Lombardo's car was strong off the line and then powered towards the center line. He has to lift.

Strong pass for Gasparrelli into the top eight.

Steve Gasparrelli's incremental times: 60ft-0.949 sec., 330ft-2.537, 660ft-3.758/203.40 mph, 1,000ft-4.789.

Left Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 14.494/76.15, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.686/258.42, Was #9
Right Lane: Brian Hough Runs 10.861/92.00, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.635/254.66, Was #7

Lots of shake and spin for both cars. The engines are quiet before 100 feet.

Left Lane: Jay Payne No Time, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.587/258.02, Was #1
Right Lane: Greg Hunter Runs 8.320/108.95, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.622/257.24, Was #4

Hunter left hard and was running well to after the 330 lights. The car started to get loose and the back end started to hop around before he clicked it off.

Couldn't tell what happened to Payne. He took the green and the engine went silent. The crew pushed him away.

3:54 p.m. Field not filled, no bump spot.
