Pro Stock Motorcycle Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 49th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Redell Harris Runs 7.217/185.28, Now #17; Best prior run: 19.677/32.15, Was #23

2:14 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 81 degrees, relative humidity 22 percent, barometer 28.86 inches, adjusted altitude 3,059 feet, track temperature 105 degrees.

Hot and dry, not exactly the combination those not already qualified really want to see. The low humidity helps make power, but the heat works against them by reducing power. However, the track temperature is low enough that a good run could produce improved numbers.

2013 champion Matt Smith is on the 12-bike bump spot at 7.064.

Harris broke just off the starting line yesterday, made a full pass today, but will have to start over tomorrow.

Left Lane: Hector Arana Runs 6.937/193.90, Now #3; Best prior run: 9.639/89.05, Was #23
Right Lane: Chaz Kennedy Runs 7.031/186.23, Now #12; Best prior run: 7.276/184.09, Was #19

Hector Sr. had problems yesterday, his sons ended up 1-2 in the order.

Now it's Adam, Jr. and Sr. in the top three spots and Smith is going to have to improve to get back into the provisional field. Kennedy also jumped into the field, on the bump spot, putting Andrew Hines on the outside.

Hector Arana's incremental times: 60ft-1.083 sec., 330ft-2.904, 660ft-4.437/159.32 mph, 1,000ft-5.781.

Left Lane: John Hall Runs 6.987/190.06, Now #8; Best prior run: 7.478/139.95, Was #23
Right Lane: Rhett Lougheed Runs 7.173/187.94, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.201/181.94, Was #18

Hall's Viper-sponsored Buell stepped right up today and Hines is now outside the field.

John Hall's incremental times: 60ft-1.070 sec., 330ft-2.897, 660ft-4.447/157.39 mph, 1,000ft-5.810.

Left Lane: Bailey Whitaker Runs 7.305/180.14, Now #23; Best prior run: 7.332/176.40, Was #23
Right Lane: Freddie Camarena Runs 7.074/192.77, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.157/184.80, Was #18

Hall's run put Jerry Savoie on the bump spot at 7.009.

Two full runs, Camarena making a lot of power (based on his speed), but both will start afresh tomorrow.

Left Lane: Michael Phillips Runs 7.154/186.64, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.296/180.45, Was #22
Right Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 6.952/192.36, Now #5; Best prior run: 7.088/176.88, Was #18

"Stevie J" had some problems on his run yesterday, but there was nothing wrong with this one, straight and smooth. That bumped Savoie, puts Shawn Gann on the bump spot at 7.007.

Steve Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.059 sec., 330ft-2.880, 660ft-4.431/157.54 mph, 1,000ft-5.788.

Left Lane: James Surber Runs 7.225/182.30, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.234/180.04, Was #22
Right Lane: Katie Sullivan Runs 6.935/192.99, Now #3; Best prior run: 7.071/184.85, Was #17

Sullivan also had problems yesterday, but nailed it today and jumped right into the middle of the Arana dogpile.

That puts Jim Underdahl on the bump spot at 7.005.

Katie Sullivan's incremental times: 60ft-1.072 sec., 330ft-2.888, 660ft-4.427/158.69 mph, 1,000ft-5.775.

Left Lane: Matt Smith Runs 7.498/187.65, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.064/187.78, Was #17
Right Lane: Jerry Savoie Runs 6.992/185.92, Now #11; Best prior run: 7.009/188.75, Was #14

These two were bumped from the field earlier in this session.

Smith's bike balked on the launch and he had problems getting it started down the track. Savoie's bike sounded like it was on the limiter on the top end, may not have shifted into high gear.

Now Scotty Pollacheck is on the bump spot at 6.996.

Jerry Savoie's incremental times: 60ft-1.061 sec., 330ft-2.868, 660ft-4.419/156.77 mph, 1,000ft-5.795.

Left Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 7.016/186.95, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.034/188.44, Was #16
Right Lane: Shawn Gann Runs 6.961/191.95, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.007/186.28, Was #14

Hines improved, stays on the outside. Gann bumped back in, putting Jerry Savoie back on the bump spot at 6.992.

Shawn Gann's incremental times: 60ft-1.069 sec., 330ft-2.884, 660ft-4.435/157.52 mph, 1,000ft-5.794.

Left Lane: Jim Underdahl Runs 7.016/191.27, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.005/190.92, Was #14
Right Lane: Scotty Pollacheck Runs 6.874/194.18, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.996/190.43, Was #13

Pollacheck had a stunning 1.049 60-foot time and went right to the top of the list, bumping Savoie.

Now John Hall is on the bump spot at 6.987.

Scotty Pollacheck's incremental times: 60ft-1.049 sec., 330ft-2.847, 660ft-4.377/159.40 mph, 1,000ft-5.720.

Left Lane: Angie Smith Runs 7.031/188.23, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.977/192.63, Was #10
Right Lane: LE Tonglet Runs 7.251/192.47, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.980/191.19, Was #11

Two good runs, no improvement in either lane.

Right Lane: Michael Ray Runs 6.949/189.58, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.974/186.85, Was #9

Two nice runs, both moved up the list a couple spots.

Eddie Krawiec's incremental times: 60ft-1.060 sec., 330ft-2.863, 660ft-4.407/157.91 mph, 1,000ft-5.763.
Michael Ray's incremental times: 60ft-1.052 sec., 330ft-2.858, 660ft-4.406/157.65 mph, 1,000ft-5.769.

Left Lane: Adam Arana Runs 6.919/191.78, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.888/195.28, Was #2
Right Lane: Hector Arana Jr Runs 6.837/195.51, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.892/194.55, Was #3

Adam failed to improve, but Jr. buried Pollacheck for the #1 spot.
