LAS VEGAS -- Three racers are vying for the JEGS Crown this weekend at the NHRA JEGS Pacific SPORTSnationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Ray Dew, League City, Texas, and Donnie Durenberger, Starbuck, Minn., were both on site for day one of qualifying and time trials while Ryan Herem is expected to make the trip over from Quartz Hill, Calif., for Saturday's final qualifying and time trails. Each has won one of the JEGS SPORTSnationals earlier this year and are eligible for the JEGS Crown which they will take home if any of them can go the distance on Sunday. 2013 JEGS Allstar Champion Mike DePalma, Glendale, Ariz., led the list of number one qualifiers today with a lap of 9.003 seconds in his '89 Trans Am. He is followed in Comp Eliminator by Clint Sallee, Glendive, Mont., and Tom Mettler, Bakersfield, Calif. Joe Roubicek and Jesse Adams are on top in Top Sportsman and Top Dragster respectively as Roubicek, Westlake Village, Calif., went 6.653 seconds at 207.66 mph. Tommy Turner and Gary Ross are No.'s 2 and 3 in Top Sportsman at 6.728, 210.34 for Turner, and 6.736, 206.39 for Ross. Adams, Yuba City, Calif., has the fastest run of the day in any class crossing the finish line at 223.25 mph in 6.128 seconds. Lyle Burnham is second at 6.407 and Val Torres third at 6.746. In Super Stock, Indiana racer Bo Butner was low in his '13 Mustang posting a 9.083 second run at 0.987 seconds under his index. Jack Bystrom, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., is second and Don Kennedy, Mesa, Ariz., sits in third. Stephen Hagberg and Bill Burkart round out the low qualifiers as Hagberg led the class in Stock and Burkhart is on top in the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley-Davidson. Hagberg, Berthoud, Colo., went 10.133 seconds in his '64 2-door sedan with Robert Pond and Paul Wong in second and third. Burkhart, Anaheim, Calif., is No. 1 with a 0.001 second reaction time followed by Tom Medlin, La Miranda, Calif., at 0.002. Final qualifying and time trails begin on Saturday at 8 a.m. Comp, Top Sportsman and Top Dragster make a final qualifying run at 10:30 a.m. Class eliminations for Stock and Super Stock begin at noon.
