Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1

ENNIS, Texas - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 28th annual AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: John Hale Runs 4.430/277.94, Now #1

1:41 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 41 percent, barometer 29.37 inches, adjusted altitude 2,598 feet, track temperature 106 degrees.

Hale starts drifting to the left, goes through the lights and makes a hard move towards the wall. He avoids contact and makes a career best pass to start the session.


Left Lane: Todd Simpson Runs 4.706/192.06, Now #2
Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 5.701/126.29, Now #3

Haddock comes off the line, makes a move to the right and hazes the tires. Simpson has problems late in the run and is out of power early.

Left Lane: Blake Alexander Runs 4.210/294.56, Now #1
Right Lane: Chad Head Runs 4.423/217.88, Now #2

Head was on a decent pass, then hazed the tires about 600 feet out. Alexander went right down the groove with a decent pass to take the top spot for now.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 6.820/92.79, Now #7
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.627/215.44, Now #4

Pedregon gets about 100 feet out and strikes the tires. Arend gets a little further, pedals a couple of times trying to get the slicks to bite, then backs off the throttle as he makes a move toward the centerline.

Left Lane: Alexis DeJoria No Time, Now #9
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.335/230.65, Now #2

DeJoria left before the tree was activated and received no time. Tasca started hazing the tires late in the run and was off the throttle early.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 5.183/195.85, Now #8
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.593/220.08, Now #5

Worsham lost traction about sixty feet out, pedaled once, then made a move toward the centerline and backed off the throttle. Wilkerson gets about 200 feet out, loses traction and has to pedal.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.092/304.32, Now #1
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.542/231.87, Now #6

Gray gets about 300 feet out and hazes the tires. Pedregon goes right down the groove with the first full pass of the session and takes the pole for now.

Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 4.115/309.13, Now #2
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.202/263.67, Now #3

Courtney goes right down the groove with a full pass and gets in the second spot for now. John was on a decent pass but hazed the tires near the end of the run.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.471/196.10, Now #9
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.135/301.13, Now #3

Beckman was on a decent pass to the 600 foot mark, then hazed the tires and backed off the throttle. Hight went right down the groove with a good run to get in the third spot for now.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.096/306.88, Now #2
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.203/300.06, Now #6

A pretty good side-by-side to end the session. Capps goes right down the groove and gets in the second spot. Hagan makes a decent run to get in the top half of the field.
