The JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals boasts a guaranteed purse of nearly $65,000 with an additional $300,000 up for grabs in contingency postings. Competing classes include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. NHRA Lucas Oil Series national event points will be awarded to drivers in all categories except Super Street. The event will also include the division's popular Top Sportsman and Top Dragster categories that, along with Super Street, will be competing for divisional event points. While the focus of the event will be on competition in the core NHRA Sportsman categories, Saturday's action will include class eliminations in Stock and Super Stock, the Top Dragster JEGS Shootout and the Moser Sportsman Shootout. NHRA reintroduced the SPORTSnationals ten years ago at No Problem Raceway Park in Belle Rose, La., to rave reviews from racers and spectators. Prior to that, NHRA had hosted the SPORTSnationals from 1974-1986 at a trio of tracks, including Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Ky., (1974-'80; 1985-'86), the old Houston International Raceway (1981-'82) and Lucas Oil Raceway (1983-'84). The JEGS NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals held in March at No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, La., was the first of the three events planned for the year and is followed by this weekend's JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals and then a third event, the JEGS NHRA Pacific SPORTSnationals at The Strip At Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Oct. 11-13. TICKETS: General admission tickets for the JEGS Northern SPORTSnationals are $15 Friday, $20 Saturday and $20 Sunday. At that time it was the fifth largest of its kind in the United States. In 1972 the Rader family expanded and improved the facility and allowing them to play host for the first time to the Springnationals. In 1996, the NHRA purchased the track, bringing an end to the Rader era. NHRA has made significant improvements to the historic facility including the addition of the three-level timing tower and corporate suites, a TV production area, asphalt-covered pit areas and staging lanes, concrete guard walls that run the entire length of the racing surface and an extensive drainage system to control water runoff. Reigning North Central Division Champions Brad Zaskowski (Super Stock) and John Scali (Top Sportsman) will be making their second appearance in the Moser Shootout while division hitters Ray Connolly in Super Comp and Troy Coughlin Jr. in Super Gas will be making their first. Connolly won last month in Michigan to secure his spot while Coughlin has a pair of wins to help give him a birth in the program. The Moser Sportsman Shootout is unique in that racers from the seven entirely different class structures will be racing each other. Eliminations will be in a dial-in/breakout handicap format on an eighth-mile. The Christmas tree will be a full countdown mode with the Cross Talk feature not in use. A $15,000 cash purse is up for grabs with $5,000 to the winner, $2,000 to the runner-up, $1,000 to each of the semi-finalists, $700 to the quarter-finalists and $400 to each of the remaining event qualifiers. To be eligible for full posted purse qualifier must run the NHRA Moser Engineering Sportsman program decal and Moser Engineering axles and display the Moser Engineering product decal during the Sportsman Shootout Event. Qualifiers not utilizing Moser Engineering axles and displaying the Moser Engineering Sportsman Shootout program decal and Moser Engineering product decal for the duration of the Moser Sportsman Shootout event will receive 50% of the posted awards. Drivers are not required to have Moser Engineering axles to qualify or participate in the program. Product use and proper decal display from tech inspection to completion of the Shootout by the competitor is required for full payout. The NHRA Certification Team will be responsible for product and decal verification at the Moser Sportsman Shootout.
