Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session

CONCORD, N.C. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, Sixth annual Carlyle Tools NHRA Carolina Nationals presented by NAPA Auto Parts listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 5.176/144.30, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.850/116.17, Was #15

5:04 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 81 degrees, relative humidity 42 percent, barometer 29.35 inches, adjusted altitude 2,746 feet, track temperature 119 degrees.

Arend gets about 300 feet out, strikes the tires and backs off the throttle.


Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.333/225.03, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.113/302.41, Was #12

Tasca was on a decent pass but hazed the tires about 600 feet out and slowed.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.118/308.21, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.099/309.91, Was #11
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.103/308.14, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.851/163.39, Was #14

A good side-by-side here, both right down the groove. Capps makes his quickest pass of the weekend and moves up a couple of spots in the order. Beckman slowed a little and stayed in the 11th spot.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.434/213.54, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.093/308.14, Was #10
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.064/314.31, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.038/317.94, Was #7

Gray gets about 500 feet out, starts hazing the tires and he backs off the throttle. Force makes an impressive pass for the conditions.

Left Lane: Chad Head Runs 10.671/57.61, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.090/305.91, Was #9
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.137/309.06, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.034/317.72, Was #6

Head goes up in smoke at the hit and has to give up on the run. Worsham makes a clean pass but doesn't improve.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.081/311.05, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.042/309.84, Was #8
Right Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.199/297.88, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.027/310.70, Was #5

Hight goes right down the groove with a decent pass but doesn't improve. DeJoria dropped a cylinder late in the run, made a move to the right, then backed off the throttle early.

Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 4.142/310.98, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.021/319.37, Was #4
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.621/186.41, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.020/318.99, Was #3

Wilkerson gets about 600 feet out and bangs the blower. Force goes right down the groove with a decent pass but doesn't improve.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.082/310.48, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.992/320.58, Was #2
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.779/167.24, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.980/319.22, Was #1

Hagan makes a decent pass, the third quickest of the session, and he will pick up a bonus point. Pedregon had the quickest time at the 330' mark but started hazing the tires soon after that and had to back off the throttle.
