Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Larry Sullivan

BROWNSBURG, Ind. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 59th annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Dave River Runs 6.881/201.43, Now #22; Best prior run: 16.292/36.90, Was #23

3:13 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 83 degrees, relative humidity 63 percent, barometer 28.87 inches, adjusted altitude 3,773 feet, track temperature 110 degrees.

Chris McGaha is on the bump spot at 6.706.

Conditions are not as good as they were for the earlier session, so those not already in the field face an uphill battle to get in.

River made a full pass, but won't be in the field tomorrow.

Left Lane: John Gaydosh Jr No Time, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.895/199.58, Was #23
Right Lane: Lewis Worden Runs 6.744/204.79, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.724/205.26, Was #20

The light turned green, Gaydosh's car moved a few feet and stopped. Worden failed to improve.

Left Lane: Paul Pittman Runs 6.825/201.94, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.781/203.92, Was #21
Right Lane: Matt Hartford Runs 6.771/204.32, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.721/205.91, Was #19

Again, no improvement.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 9.869/138.70, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.716/207.24, Was #18
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.731/205.76, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.696/206.70, Was #15

KJ shook and slowed.

Left Lane: Steve Kent Runs 6.713/205.69, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.710/206.35, Was #17
Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.715/206.07, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.689/206.39, Was #13

Kent was the last car in the lanes with a chance to bump into the field and he failed to improve, so the sixteen-car field is set and the rest of the runs will determine the pairings.

Left Lane: Chris McGaha Runs 6.720/206.07, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.706/206.45, Was #16
Right Lane: Rodger Brogdon Runs 6.712/206.61, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.689/206.39, Was #14

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.703/206.01, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.676/206.76, Was #12
Right Lane: Curt Steinbach Runs 13.146/65.78, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.661/205.98, Was #10

Steinbach shook and slowed.

Left Lane: Vincent Nobile Runs 6.678/206.23, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.674/206.95, Was #11
Right Lane: Shane Gray Runs 6.673/207.53, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.644/207.85, Was #6

Nobile came closer to his previous best than any of the already-qualified cars in this session so far.

Left Lane: Mark Martino Runs 6.677/206.95, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.661/207.72, Was #9
Right Lane: Rickie Jones Runs 6.663/207.24, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.644/207.85, Was #5

About now we'd say "these are tuning runs for eliminations," but the weather tomorrow is supposed to be a lot different than it is right now - cooler and dryer. That will give the crew chiefs and their computers a workout.

Left Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.645/207.98, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.649/208.33, Was #8
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.645/207.88, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.640/208.10, Was #4

Wow! On a Summit "photo op," Jason Line actually improved and moved one spot up on the ladder.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.646/207.88, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.646/207.50, Was #8
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.652/206.89, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.637/206.99, Was #3

Impressive run by AJ, matching his best previous ET with a bigger speed.

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.648/208.30, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.637/208.59, Was #2
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.636/207.91, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.621/208.20, Was #1

Last pair. No improvement for either.
