Intermittent Rain Continues
By Larry Sullivan

POMONA, Calif. - 4:25 p.m. The following scenario has been repeated several times: The rain stops and the track crew gets busy with brooms and blowers and heavier equipment, trying to make the shiny racing surface dull and sticky again. Then calls of "It's raining again" and "Seek cover" bring the track drying effort to a stop again.

At one point, the estimated "time to go" on track drying was down to five minutes and the Top Fuel drivers were getting back in their cars, but then the "It's raining hard again" call sent the track drying crew away and the drivers and teams headed back to the pits.

Race officials still hope to get the Top Fuel qualifying session in this afternoon, but the "window" for doing so is rapidly closing, up against a firm 7 p.m. curfew.

Stay tuned, we'll let you know how this "on again, off again" scenario plays out.
