GLENDORA, Calif. -
Bruno Massel, Brad Burton and Jimmy DeFrank are the most recent drivers to wrap up their 2012 NHRA Lucas Oil Championship having done so the last two weekend's with back to back events at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Massel sat 1700 miles away at home in Woodridge, Ill., with a 55 point lead in Comp Eliminator while David Billingsley, Clint Neff and Justin Lamb were all in competition with a shot to overtake the former champion. All three fell in round one on Saturday evening at the Big O Tires NHRA Nationals giving the championship to Massel.
Burton, Kirkland, Wash., also clinched at the national event in Las Vegas when Leo Glasbrenner and Nick Siebert both dropped out of contention. Burton built a big point's lead early on with a strong start to the season winning national events in Pomona, Calif., and at the spring race in Las Vegas, as well as three of the first four NHRA Northwest divisional events. He'll go for his sixth win of the season this weekend at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. His Dad Scott also competes in the class and was second in points behind Brad in the middle of the season before slipping back in the standings. Four drivers came into this past weekend's Lucas Oil divisional event in Las Vegas with a shot at the Super Stock title as the reigning Stock Champion Joe Santangelo was leading the points but out of races to claim. DeFrank was second with the best opportunity to gain points with Bryan Worner and Jody Lang also in the chase. Worner and Lang each failed to reach the final round which dropped them out while DeFrank went on to win event and clinch the title. This is DeFrank's fourth National Championship grabbing his first in 1997 followed by championships in 1999, 2009 and now in 2012. This weekend's win was his third of the year, one national and a pair of divisional wins. All the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Champions will be honored at the NHRA Lucas Oil Awards Ceremony on Monday, November 12, at the Hard Rock Caf? in Hollywood, Calif., and then will also be recognized at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Awards Ceremony that evening at the Grand Ballroom in the Hollywood and Highlands Center.
