Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1

MOHNTON, Pa. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 28th annual Auto-Plus NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: John Fiorini Runs 10.836/71.04, Now #1

11:07 a.m. - Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees, relative humidity 62 percent, barometer 29.52 inches, adjusted altitude 1,861 feet, track temperature 86 degrees.

Fiorini launched, shook the tires, pedaled it, got the rear end bouncing up and down, then got off the throttle.


Left Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 5.811/251.34, Now #1
Right Lane: Duane Beers No Time, Now #3

Beers shook the tires coming out of the gate and his chutes deployed. Dobbs had some tire shake but drove though it to finish the run.

Left Lane: John Headley Runs 6.621/208.17, Now #3
Right Lane: Marie Ferriolo Runs 5.792/247.97, Now #1

Both cars went straight down the groove with just a bit of tire shake.

Left Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 5.686/252.47, Now #1
Right Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 14.314/91.20, Now #6

Tigges launched and got out to about 330 feet when his car shut down. Bogolo had a clean run down the groove to take the top spot in the order for now.

Left Lane: Paul Noakes Runs 6.390/221.27, Now #4
Right Lane: Brian Harvanek Runs 7.209/236.75, Now #6

Noakes came out of the gate and started to drift toward the center line. He pedaled it and got back into the run. Harvanek's car came out of the gate slowly and never really got up to speed.

Left Lane: DJ Cox Jr. Runs 5.704/253.37, Now #2
Right Lane: Eric Lourie Runs 5.895/243.72, Now #5

Both cars went down the groove.

Left Lane: Dan Pomponio Runs 5.744/252.43, Now #4
Right Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.608/256.06, Now #1

Pomponio and Thompson went down the groove to make their way into the field.

Left Lane: John Anderika Runs 5.598/253.80, Now #1
Right Lane: Cassie Simonton Runs 16.900/44.75, Now #14

Simonton shook the tires out of the gate and clicked it off. Anderika had a good run to take over the top spot in the order for now.

Left Lane: Paul Gill No Time, Now #17
Right Lane: Todd Veney Runs 5.661/253.71, Now #3

While Veney did his burnout, Gill and his crew appeared to have some kind of problem in the waterbox. Eventually Gill stood through the escape hatch, talked with his crew, then sat back down and the crew pushed his car out of the way. Veney made a solo run to get into the number three spot for now.

Left Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 5.619/255.87, Now #4
Right Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.561/260.66, Now #1

Manzo had a strong run down the groove to take over the top spot in the qualifying order at the end of the first session. Ferro also had a clean run and will be in the number four spot.
