Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 47th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: T.J. Zizzo Runs 3.935/305.42, Now #12; Best prior run: 9.896/74.86, Was #25
Right Lane: Clay Millican Runs 3.907/310.91, Now #11; No Prior Run

1:16 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 73 degrees, relative humidity 23 percent, barometer 28.75 inches, adjusted altitude 2,654 feet, track temperature 89 degrees.

Lots of bright sun on the track. Terry McMillen is on the bump spot at 3.965.

Millican's time was DQ'ed for oil yesterday. Two great side by side passes and that will put both cars in the field for now.

T.J. Zizzo's incremental times: 60ft-0.882 sec., 330ft-2.219, 660ft-3.149/271.52 mph.
Clay Millican's incremental times: 60ft-0.870 sec., 330ft-2.191, 660ft-3.124/270.75 mph.

Left Lane: Thomas Nataas Runs 3.932/303.23, Now #12; Best prior run: 9.735/77.16, Was #26
Right Lane: Mike Salinas Runs 4.100/269.62, Now #18; Best prior run: 4.999/190.16, Was #22

...and another pair run side by side down the track. Nataas just bumps into the field, but with a 26 car field this will be tough to hold for long.

Salinas runs into the low fours, still not pulling on the top end and moves up to #18.

Thomas Nataas' incremental times: 60ft-0.866 sec., 330ft-2.194, 660ft-3.135/267.64 mph.
Mike Salinas' incremental times: 60ft-0.897 sec., 330ft-2.273, 660ft-3.251/258.07 mph.

Left Lane: Keith Murt Runs 3.914/312.64, Now #12; Best prior run: 7.187/80.58, Was #26
Right Lane: Steven Chrisman Runs 4.503/250.78, Now #22; Best prior run: 4.381/271.68, Was #21

Thomas Nataas is on the bump spot at 3.932.

Chrisman's engine had holes out at the launch and it hurts him a lot.

Murt makes a strong pass for his second run in NHRA competition and he takes over the current bump spot on a clean straight pass.

Keith Murt's incremental times: 60ft-0.878 sec., 330ft-2.212, 660ft-3.139/274.05 mph.

Left Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 3.934/310.20, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.721/100.16, Was #26
Right Lane: Todd Paton Runs 3.949/294.05, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.278/214.42, Was #20

Two good runs, but neither car will will get into the field. Big moves up the ladder.

A career best ET and MPH for Paton!

Shawn Langdon's incremental times: 60ft-0.872 sec., 330ft-2.217, 660ft-3.153/271.62 mph.
Todd Paton's incremental times: 60ft-0.874 sec., 330ft-2.213, 660ft-3.142/270.48 mph.

Left Lane: Damien Harris Runs 4.189/279.85, Now #22; Best prior run: 5.849/112.15, Was #26
Right Lane: Chris Karamesines Runs 4.024/281.30, Now #20; Best prior run: 4.004/295.21, Was #20

A BIG Happy Birthday the Chris Karamesines, who is eighty "something" years old today!

Damien is all over the track at mid-point and stays after it through the lights, He picks up a bunch and four spots on the ladder.

Karamesines car slows on the top end to stay #20.

Damien Harris' incremental times: 60ft-0.911 sec., 330ft-2.282, 660ft-3.304/230.49 mph.
Chris Karamesines' incremental times: 60ft-0.874 sec., 330ft-2.221, 660ft-3.179/259.26 mph.

Left Lane: Pat Dakin Runs 3.958/278.81, Now #18; Best prior run: 4.566/171.99, Was #26
Right Lane: Mike Ashley No Time, Now #20; Best prior run: 3.978/305.91, Was #19

Two good passes for a while. Both cars run well until mid-track, where Ashley's engine starts to drop a bunch of cylinders. There is a big flash/bang and fire from the engine and the car makes a hard move into Dakin's lane right after the lights. They run right together, side by side, until Ashley pulls the car back into his lane and they both stop together on the track.

Dakin's engine stayed happy a little longer than Ashley's and then starts to drop cylinders too. That puts him side by side with Ashley after the finish line. A little more excitement than expected for these two veteran drivers.

Pat Dakin's incremental times: 60ft-0.878 sec., 330ft-2.214, 660ft-3.142/272.34 mph.
Mike Ashley's incremental times: 60ft-0.853 sec., 330ft-2.180, 660ft-3.110/270.10 mph.

1:36 p.m. Lots of clean up in Ashley's lane. That's isn't the team's first oil down, so his time will be DQ'ed.

Left Lane: Dom Lagana Runs 6.552/107.79, Now #26; Best prior run: 4.500/179.18, Was #26
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 5.063/143.20, Now #19; Best prior run: 3.965/313.88, Was #19

Two smokers, so no improvements

Left Lane: Antron Brown Runs 4.088/245.49, Now #22; Best prior run: 4.380/183.47, Was #24
Right Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 3.900/313.73, Now #10; Best prior run: 3.898/312.93, Was #10

Championship contenter, Brown, will go into tomorrow final sessions out side looking in. The car leaves well and then the engine is unhappy down track and he slows.

McClenathan runs close to yesterday's best and will stay #10.

Antron Brown's incremental times: 60ft-0.852 sec., 330ft-2.172, 660ft-3.153/237.92 mph.
Cory McClenathan's incremental times: 60ft-0.860 sec., 330ft-2.198, 660ft-3.128/274.61 mph.

Left Lane: Troy Buff Runs 5.784/107.72, Now #16; Best prior run: 3.940/303.37, Was #16
Right Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 3.843/320.51, Now #5; Best prior run: 3.870/315.34, Was #8

Buff's car is a little lazy off the line and then kicks the tires near the 330 lights.

Best pass of the session for Dixon and that moves him up three spots to the new #5 spot.

Larry Dixon's incremental times: 60ft-0.853 sec., 330ft-2.175, 660ft-3.087/280.08 mph.

Left Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 3.869/317.64, Now #9; Best prior run: 3.897/319.98, Was #9
Right Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 3.853/318.39, Now #7; Best prior run: 3.859/315.19, Was #8

Two great looking side by side passes.

Vandergriff is off the line first, but Bernstein has better incrementals going down the track. He picks up 0.006 in ET and a spot on the ladder. Vandergriff improves his ET too, but will stay #9.

Bob Vandergriff's incremental times: 60ft-0.862 sec., 330ft-2.188, 660ft-3.106/277.83 mph.
Brandon Bernstein's incremental times: 60ft-0.850 sec., 330ft-2.176, 660ft-3.091/278.23 mph.

Left Lane: David Grubnic Runs 5.058/138.71, Now #8; Best prior run: 3.854/315.49, Was #8
Right Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 3.854/313.07, Now #6; Best prior run: 3.851/319.22, Was #6

Team Kalitta to the line!

Grubnic has the starting line advantage at the green and has incrementals close to Kalitta until right before the 330 lights, where the blower belt comes snaking out from underneath the car.

Kalitta makes another strong pass close to yesterday's and will stay #6.

Doug Kalitta's incremental times: 60ft-0.849 sec., 330ft-2.175, 660ft-3.089/277.32 mph.

Left Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 3.853/316.97, Now #3; Best prior run: 3.837/319.14, Was #3
Right Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 3.877/314.39, Now #4; Best prior run: 3.838/317.87, Was #4

Massey matches Bernstein's ET to stay #3. Lucas has another strong pass to stay #4.

Spencer Massey's incremental times: 60ft-0.853 sec., 330ft-2.185, 660ft-3.091/279.56 mph.
Morgan Lucas' incremental times: 60ft-0.874 sec., 330ft-2.199, 660ft-3.112/278.29 mph.

Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 3.895/313.80, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.827/321.19, Was #1
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 3.834/316.67, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.830/314.61, Was #2

Last pair of the session. Worsham takes the three bonus points this time with the quickest pass of the round. It's not enough to bump Schumacher out of the top spot, but a great pass none the less.

Schumacher was off the line first and ran within 0.004 of Worsham in sixty feet to run a strong pass to the finish line.

Tony Schumacher's incremental times: 60ft-0.845 sec., 330ft-2.182, 660ft-3.112/268.60 mph.
Del Worsham's incremental times: 60ft-0.841 sec., 330ft-2.161, 660ft-3.072/279.32 mph.

2:19 p.m. Keith Murf is on the bump spot at 3.914.
