Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 47th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 3.978/305.91, Now #1
Right Lane: Damien Harris Runs 5.849/112.15, Now #2

1:39 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 72 degrees, relative humidity 23 percent, barometer 28.98 inches, adjusted altitude 2,295 feet, track temperature 81 degrees.

We've seen Ashley many times in the past, but this will be the premier event in TF for both him and Harris. New York vs. Australia!

Ashley's Dexter Team dragster makes a great initial pass into the three nineties.

Harris is well off the line first and pacing Ashley until just after the 330, where the engine gets unhappy and erupts into a ball of flame. He is off the loud pedal quickly and coasts on down the track.

Mike Ashley's incremental times: 60ft-0.879 sec., 330ft-2.235, 660ft-3.185/266.69 mph.
Damien Harris' incremental times: 60ft-0.908 sec., 330ft-2.414, 660ft-3.945/137.90 mph.

1:42 p.m. Time out for cleanup in the right lane. This is Harris' "Freebie", so his time will count.

Left Lane: Todd Paton Runs 4.278/214.42, Now #2
Right Lane: Thomas Nataas Runs 9.735/77.16, Now #4

California vs. Norway, this time!

Both of these two have run in TF before. First run of the season for Paton.

Ouch! Problems a pair. Nataas is first with the slicks up in smoke right at the hit. He wisely doesn't push it and coasts on down.

Paton gets a nice 0.868 sixty foot time and then has a bunch of flame from the engine at half track. It flairs back up near the finish line and he pulls the car over towards the wall.

Left Lane: Mike Salinas Runs 4.999/190.16, Now #3
Right Lane: Keith Murt Runs 7.187/80.58, Now #5

1:58 p.m. That was quick.

Murt is new to NHRA TF too and gets off the line first and then starts to slow immediately. Salinas' fueler is lazy off the line and starts to drop cylinder going down the track. He gives it up too.

Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 3.898/312.93, Now #1
Right Lane: Pat Dakin Runs 4.566/171.99, Now #4

All NHRA veterans from here on.

Nice pass for Cory Mac, right on down the track and into the new top spot.

Dakin was away first and pacing Cory, until near half track, where the tires start to smoke.

Cory McClenathan's incremental times: 60ft-0.858 sec., 330ft-2.195, 660ft-3.122/275.84 mph.

Left Lane: Steven Chrisman Runs 4.381/271.68, Now #4
Right Lane: T.J. Zizzo Runs 9.896/74.86, Now #10

Zizzo strikes the tires at the green and is done for this session.

Chrisman's fueler is a little lazy off the line and still moves into the current #4 spot with an early shut off.

Left Lane: Chris Karamesines Runs 4.004/295.21, Now #3
Right Lane: Dom Lagana Runs 4.500/179.18, Now #6

Lagana jumps off the line with a nice 0.858 sixty foot time and has a good 330 time, but the engine flashes and bangs with a bunch of fire and slows about mid-track.

Karamesines takes his time leaving and has a near three second pass to move him into the current #3 spot.

2:10 p.m. There is "Aluminum" on the track in the right lane. Lagana will keep the numbers.

Chris Karamesines' incremental times: 60ft-0.884 sec., 330ft-2.246, 660ft-3.196/266.37 mph.
Dom Lagana's incremental times: 60ft-0.858 sec., 330ft-2.221, 660ft-3.285/209.65 mph.

Left Lane: Clay Millican No Time, Now #14
Right Lane: Troy Buff Runs 3.940/303.37, Now #2

2:15 p.m. T.J. Zizzo is on the bump spot at 9.896.

Nice side by side pass for both cars. They run together with Millican having the incrementals advantage down the track. There is a flash and a bunch of smoke from the Parts Plus fueler. That would have been for the #2 spot, but he loses his ET/MPH for the oil down penality.

Buff had a clean pass and will take the current #2 spot for now. Nice!

Clay Millican's incremental times: 60ft-0.861 sec., 330ft-2.196, 660ft-3.124/270.97 mph.
Troy Buff's incremental times: 60ft-0.874 sec., 330ft-2.215, 660ft-3.147/270.54 mph.

Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 3.965/313.88, Now #4
Right Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 3.897/319.98, Now #1

2:24 p.m. Back to racing.

That's the way it's supposed to go! Vandergriff is off the line first and stays there from start to finish. That good enough for the new #1 spot.

Great pass for McMillan too and he slides into the top half of the field for now.

Terry McMillen's incremental times: 60ft-0.881 sec., 330ft-2.244, 660ft-3.190/270.00 mph.
Bob Vandergriff's incremental times: 60ft-0.869 sec., 330ft-2.213, 660ft-3.135/276.63 mph.

Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 3.838/317.87, Now #1
Right Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 6.721/100.16, Now #14

Team mates, but not the same tune up.

They leave within 0.02 of each other and stay that way until after the sixtyfoot lights, where Langdon's slicks are up in smoke.

Lucas is long gone and runs near his career best to take over the new top spot.

Morgan Lucas' incremental times: 60ft-0.865 sec., 330ft-2.177, 660ft-3.079/280.31 mph.

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 3.851/319.22, Now #2
Right Lane: David Grubnic Runs 3.854/315.49, Now #3

Mike Salinas is on the bump spot at 4.999.

Kalitta was busy staying with the car down the track, but the powers there and he takes over the number two spot anyway.

Grubnic gets to the finish line right behind him with no drama to the #3 position for now.

Doug Kalitta's incremental times: 60ft-0.859 sec., 330ft-2.181, 660ft-3.091/278.52 mph.
David Grubnic's incremental times: 60ft-0.871 sec., 330ft-2.189, 660ft-3.090/279.73 mph.

Left Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 3.859/315.19, Now #5
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 3.827/321.19, Now #1

...and we have a new #1 qualifier in the house, as Schumacher starts with the best 60 foot time and thunders to the finish line without apparent effort.

Bernstein was just 0.002 slower in sixty feet and stays right with the Army car into the current #5 position.

Brandon Bernstein's incremental times: 60ft-0.847 sec., 330ft-2.170, 660ft-3.090/276.01 mph.
Tony Schumacher's incremental times: 60ft-0.845 sec., 330ft-2.156, 660ft-3.073/278.81 mph.

Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 3.870/315.34, Now #6
Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 4.380/183.47, Now #14

Todd Paton is on the bump spot at 4.278.

Two more strong leaves, with near best sixty foot times. Brown was just a little better to the 330 lights and then has the slicks start to spin.

Dixon stays clean to the finish line and moves into the top half of the field.

Larry Dixon's incremental times: 60ft-0.848 sec., 330ft-2.176, 660ft-3.100/274.66 mph.
Antron Brown's incremental times: 60ft-0.846 sec., 330ft-2.161, 660ft-3.196/216.03 mph.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 3.830/314.61, Now #2
Right Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 3.837/319.14, Now #3

Last pair: Chris Karamesines is on the bump spot at 4.004.

Three eighty three's a pair.

Massey is away first and quicker to sixty feet. Worsham's fueler is marching and he runs just 0.007 quicker in the light to get the one bonus point advantage over Massey.

Great racing!

Del Worsham's incremental times: 60ft-0.849 sec., 330ft-2.161, 660ft-3.066/279.32 mph.
Spencer Massey's incremental times: 60ft-0.843 sec., 330ft-2.168, 660ft-3.079/279.50 mph.

2:42 p.m. Tony Schumacher is number one at 3.827 and Terry McMillen is on the bump spot at 3.965.
