BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Nostalgia Top Fuel at the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series, 20th annual California Hot Rod Reunion, presented by the Automobile Club of Southern California listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run: Left Lane: Jim Murphy Runs 5.786/246.12, Now #1 Right Lane: Rick White Runs 5.860/245.72, Now #2 2:44 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 83 degrees, relative humidity 40 percent, barometer 28.97 inches, adjusted altitude 2,943 feet, track temperature 111 degrees. Time for the Kings of the Sport! Left Lane: Terry Cox Runs 5.990/253.47, Now #3 Right Lane: Brendan Murry No Time, Now #4 Cox makes his burn out in high C before backing up for the run. He's late off the line and runs well down the track into the fives. Murry had incrementals close to Cox, but has the car drift to the centerline and nail the mid-track lights for No Time. Terry Cox's incremental times: 60ft-1.107 sec., 330ft-2.784, 660ft-4.055/198.61 mph, 1,000ft-5.107. Left Lane: Rick McGee Runs 5.861/214.83, Now #4 Right Lane: Michelle Lewis Runs 5.775/235.02, Now #1 Nice side by side passes until near the lights, where McGee's engine starts to puke stuff. He slows in speed, but still has the momentum to run in the five eighties. Lewis's numbers were softer down low, but stays clean through the lights to take over the top spot for now. Rick McGee's incremental times: 60ft-1.044 sec., 330ft-2.654, 660ft-3.871/206.13 mph, 1,000ft-4.893. Michelle Lewis' incremental times: 60ft-1.087 sec., 330ft-2.696, 660ft-3.893/211.13 mph, 1,000ft-4.882. Left Lane: Howard Haight Runs 5.913/249.21, Now #6 Right Lane: Bill Dunlap Runs 5.868/237.38, Now #5 Two more clean and straight passes with a big time MPH for Haight. Both cars will get into the current field and are likely to stay there. Left Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 6.064/250.64, Now #8 Right Lane: Mendy Fry No Time, Now #10 Big fuel leak from the back of the hat and Fry has to shut off. Bartone nails the throttle and runs the quickest sixty foot time so far. The car is an animal and he has to pump the throttle three times, getting the car to the finish line. He still runs into the number 8 spot with a big time two hundred and fifty plus pass. Tony Bartone's incremental times: 60ft-1.034 sec., 330ft-2.693, 660ft-4.108/183.10 mph, 1,000ft-5.191. Left Lane: Denver Schutz Runs 5.785/234.70, Now #2 Right Lane: Brett Harris Runs 5.987/232.75, Now #8 It's Schutz from start to finish with a new quick sixty foot time and a strong pass into the new #2 spot. Clean and straight! Harris is a little slow off the line and never picks up the pace. He will have to settle for the number eight spot. Denver Schutz's incremental times: 60ft-1.022 sec., 330ft-2.612, 660ft-3.831/205.41 mph, 1,000ft-4.867. Brett Harris' incremental times: 60ft-1.056 sec., 330ft-2.750, 660ft-4.023/198.29 mph, 1,000ft-5.075. Left Lane: Brad Thompson Runs 6.204/191.76, Now #11 Right Lane: Jim Boyd Runs 7.588/133.33, Now #12 Boyd doesn't do a burnout, as usual and it may have cost him this time, as the the tires start to spin after the 330 lights and he slows. Thompson gets a full pass, but the fueler is lazy off the line and will notch into the next to last position, right above Boyd. 3:16 p.m. Michelle Lewis is number one with a 5.775 and the field is not filled, no bump spot. Left Lane: Dan Horan Jr. Runs 6.281/214.31, Now #12 Horan "sneaks in late" and makes an on and off pass. It's not clear whether this will count. Check the qualifying list later.
