LAKESIDE, Calif. --

Becky Sylvester
The WFA capped off the 2011 season at Barona 1/8th Mile Drag Strip in the hills of San Diego. Point's leader Dean Oberg only had to qualify in the top 8 to secure the championship. The event started off with the National Anthem followed by a side by side pedal fest between new comer Keith Wilson and last years champ Jim Maroney. First round had its delays as Maroney had to be dug out of the sand box and Becky Sylvester went on a wild ride that ended with a hard impact to the wall. Becky is fine, but the same can't be said for the orange 23t. Tricky track conditions had drivers on their toes and fans on their feet as most cars were sideways at some point during the run. In true champion fashion, Dean Oberg qualified number one with a 4.48, wrapping up the 2011 championship. Maroney's sand car was number two, with Hal Rishton's 5.68 rounding out the top 8 spots.

Sheldon Lofgreen
Second round went a little smoother, as all the teams did a great job of putting on a show with big burnouts and crowd cheering sideways runs. With the championship wrapped up, second and third place was yet undecided. Going into the second round Sheldon Lofgreen in Arizona Thunder had a 1/2 point lead over Eric Gates' Barona Dragway Special. Lofgreen was the second pair out and had to run better than Gates to maintain his lead. After getting crossed up and posting a 6.29 things were looking good for Gates. Rumor has it that Gates paid Mike Hoyt to get in his head, as Hoyt took home the Torco quick reaction time award in the lane next to Lofgreen. Gates was the final car down the track in second round. On a single pass, with no pressure in the opposite lane, Eric Gates pedaled to a 5.60, qualifying him number 8 and bumping Lofgreen out of the money and out of second place!

Between rounds Becky Sylvester made an appearance on the starting line and got a spirit lifting, standing ovation from the crowd. Thanks to the fans at Barona Drag Strip for the kind gestures. The final round paired up the "old" champion, as the announcer put it, Jim Maroney against the "new champion", Dean Oberg. In a fitting storybook "passing of the torch" Dean Oberg cruised to a win as Maroney lit up the tires at 300 ft. The 2011 championship winner Dean Oberg proved to be the man to beat as he "ran the table" by qualifying number one taking home the RBS Superchargers Low ET award, won the race and won the championship. Great job to the Simple Pleasure team!
