Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #1

NORWALK, Ohio - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, Fourth annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Tim Cullinan Runs 4.342/245.05, Now #1

Weather conditions: air temperature 82 degrees, relative humidity 47 percent, barometer 29.09 inches, adjusted altitude 3,167 feet, track temperature 118 degrees.

Cullinan started mixing up cylinders and then the engine went away right before the finish line. The Safety Safari is rolling so apparently he put some oil on the track.


Right Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 5.644/113.02, Now #2

Vandergriff starts to lose traction early and clicks it off by half track.

Left Lane: Doug Foley Runs 4.075/301.47, Now #1
Right Lane: Pat Dakin No Time, Now #4

Dakin had problems when they went to fire the car, so they will not make the call. foley launched hard and made a good clean pass, straight down the groove. Doug Foley's incremental times: 60ft-0.900 sec., 330ft-2.291, 660ft-3.268/261.17 mph.

Right Lane: David Grubnic Runs 3.911/309.42, Now #1

Grubnic with a great looking pass, hitting on all eight all the way down the 1000 feet. David Grubnic's incremental times: 60ft-0.846 sec., 330ft-2.186, 660ft-3.127/269.94 mph. Grubnic sets the track mph record here.

Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 4.031/291.63, Now #3
Right Lane: Steve Torrence Runs 3.950/305.49, Now #2

Finally a side-by-side drag race...pretty good one with torrence going to the number two spot and McMillen going to the number three spot. Torrence with just a little wiggle early in the run. Steve Torrence's incremental times: 60ft-0.861 sec., 330ft-2.206, 660ft-3.155/266.11 mph. McMillen with a good clean pass to start the weekend. Terry McMillen's incremental times: 60ft-0.868 sec., 330ft-2.240, 660ft-3.205/260.71 mph.

Left Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 3.931/305.91, Now #2
Right Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 3.998/290.38, Now #4

Lucas dropped a cylinder or two early and then had some engine smoke on the top end and apparently used up an engine in the lights. Langdon with a good looking pass to go to the number two spot. Shawn Langdon's incremental times: 60ft-0.848 sec., 330ft-2.187, 660ft-3.137/267.11 mph.

Left Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 3.848/312.42, Now #1
Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 3.946/307.02, Now #4

This is great looking pass for Bernstein as he goes to the top of the pack. Brandon Bernstein's incremental times: 60ft-0.843 sec., 330ft-2.150, 660ft-3.072/274.00 mph. Bernstein sets both ends of the track record with this pass. Brown with a real nice pass to go to the number four spot. Antron Brown's incremental times: 60ft-0.849 sec., 330ft-2.191, 660ft-3.152/265.27 mph.

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 3.940/313.00, Now #5
Right Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 3.889/308.57, Now #2

Cory Mac with real nice pass to move to the number two spot. Cory McClenathan's incremental times: 60ft-0.832 sec., 330ft-2.161, 660ft-3.101/268.38 mph. Kalitta starts drifting out of the groove and over by the centerline, but still runs top speed of the round. Doug Kalitta's incremental times: 60ft-0.870 sec., 330ft-2.220, 660ft-3.161/270.21 mph. Kalitta sets the track speed record.

Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 3.920/308.92, Now #5
Right Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 3.917/300.26, Now #4

These two wer side-by-side all the way down the 1000 feet for the number four and five spots. Tony Schumacher's incremental times: 60ft-0.832 sec., 330ft-2.181, 660ft-3.132/267.85 mph.
Larry Dixon's incremental times: 60ft-0.837 sec., 330ft-2.160, 660ft-3.112/264.96 mph.
