Competition Eliminator Qualifying Notes, Session #1

JOLIET, Ill. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Competition Eliminator at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 13th annual United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by Miller Welders listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, amount over/under index, and position in order following run, class and class index:
Left Lane: Mike Graves Runs 7.867/171.84/-0.393, Now #2 D/A Index: 8.26
Right Lane: Wayne Henderson Runs 6.540/206.76/-0.490, Now #1 A/ED Index: 7.03

12:36 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 77 degrees, relative humidity 48 percent, barometer 29.10 inches, adjusted altitude 2,756 feet, track temperature 109 degrees.

Two clean runs to open the session.


Left Lane: James Caro Runs 8.237/161.77/-0.433, Now #2 B/SMA Index: 8.67
Right Lane: Jim Winje Runs 9.489/110.09/0.419, Now #4 E/SM Index: 9.07

Winje slowed on the top end, could not see why.

Left Lane: Nick Panagiotaros No Time, Now #5 B/AA Index: 7.62
Right Lane: Russ Kelly No Time, Now #6 A/AP Index: 7.17

Oh-for-two here, Kelly shut off in the water and Panagiotaros' Neon "sprung a leak" on the burnout.

Left Lane: Justin Jenkins Runs 9.603/142.91/-0.067, Now #5 I/SMA Index: 9.67
Right Lane: Steve Ambrose Runs 7.835/166.91/-0.565, Now #1 J/AA Index: 8.40

Jenkins' car bogged on the launch. Ambrose made a nice run on his first try.

Left Lane: Pat Ross Runs 8.058/167.38/-0.562, Now #2 F/A Index: 8.62
Right Lane: Jerry Arnold Runs 7.920/165.44/-0.540, Now #3 G/ED Index: 8.46

Two nice runs here...

Left Lane: Adam Hickey Runs 8.224/164.05/-0.486, Now #6 C/SMA Index: 8.71
Right Lane: Vinny Barone Runs 7.762/170.02/-0.638, Now #1 A/SR Index: 8.40

Barone ran under the national record on his first pass to go to the head of the list. Hickey was off his usual pace on the top end.

Left Lane: Steve Szupka Runs 8.261/155.58/-0.559, Now #5 G/EA Index: 8.82
Right Lane: Doug Warren Runs 6.558/208.10/-0.572, Now #2 A/DA Index: 7.13

Warren also ran under his class national record, took over the second spot.

Left Lane: Shaun Vincent Runs 8.633/152.23/-0.497, Now #7 C/TA Index: 9.13
Right Lane: Rick Brown Runs 8.310/161.54/-0.490, Now #9 B/TA Index: 8.80

Trucks, we got trucks...and two good opening runs.

Left Lane: Jim Greenheck Runs 8.857/131.37/0.897, Now #16 C/AA Index: 7.96
Right Lane: Fred Allen Runs 9.551/116.57/0.461, Now #15 C/SR Index: 9.09

Both drivers were off the competitive pace almost from the start.

Left Lane: Kevin Robb Runs 7.382/178.54/-0.558, Now #7 D/ED Index: 7.94
Right Lane: Robert Bailey Runs 6.625/203.77/-0.575, Now #2 A/ED Index: 7.20

Both dragster drivers made solid opening runs, Bailey taking over the second spot.

Left Lane: Arnie Martel Runs 7.622/176.07/-0.578, Now #3 D/AA Index: 8.20
Right Lane: Matt Harris Runs 7.750/175.09/-0.610, Now #2 E/A Index: 8.36

Nice side-by-side show from these two...and Harris is now in the second spot, just the second car more than 0.6 under his index this session.

Left Lane: Bruno Massel Runs 15.864/51.08/8.074, Now #22 DD/AT Index: 7.79
Right Lane: Greg Kamplain Runs 7.016/188.86/-0.544, Now #10 C/DA Index: 7.56

Massel's car was slow off the mark and he slowed about 100 feet into the run.

Left Lane: Chad Voges Runs 7.978/158.65/-0.512, Now #12 K/A Index: 8.49
Right Lane: Jay Billingsley Runs 8.406/155.58/-0.384, Now #19 F/ED Index: 8.79



Left Lane: Bill Riemenapp Runs 8.786/149.15/-0.304, Now #21 C/SR Index: 9.09
Right Lane: Mike DePalma Runs 8.263/162.16/-0.557, Now #10 C/T Index: 8.82



Left Lane: Sal Biondo Runs 8.227/158.91/-0.533, Now #13 I/AA Index: 8.76
Right Lane: Alan Ellis Runs 6.650/204.98/-0.500, Now #15 A/AP Index: 7.15



Left Lane: Brian Browell Runs 7.247/181.25/-0.543, Now #13 D/D Index: 7.79
Right Lane: Frank Aragona Jr. Runs 8.161/160.67/-0.629, Now #2 F/ED Index: 8.79

Aragona is the third to go better than 0.6 under his index and he is now in the second spot.

Left Lane: Doug Lambeck Runs 8.527/157.76/-0.443, Now #22 D/SMA Index: 8.97
Right Lane: Brian Antony Runs 7.483/184.07/-0.397, Now #24 B/AP Index: 7.88



Left Lane: David Rampy Runs 7.278/168.45/-0.582, Now #4 A/EA Index: 7.86

Rampy made a nice pass to close out the session. They will be back in a couple hours for another session today.
