Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 45th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Jim Cunningham Runs 12.729/69.08, Now #22; Best prior run: 16.280/49.99, Was #23

3:36 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 72 degrees, relative humidity 39 percent, barometer 28.85 inches, adjusted altitude 2,561 feet, track temperature 82 degrees.

Warren Johnson is on the bump spot at 6.639.

Last chance to qualify and it's all over by 100 feet as the new Mustang makes a quick dart towards the center line. Cunningham wisely shuts it down.

Left Lane: Ben Watson Runs 7.162/152.45, Now #22; Best prior run: 14.533/56.94, Was #23
Right Lane: Danny Gruninger Runs 6.741/206.04, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.756/205.88, Was #21

Watson was on reasonable pass and then had the car move hard towards the wall.

Gruninger finds a little power, but can only move up one spot.

Left Lane: Erica Enders Runs 6.720/204.82, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.743/204.79, Was #21
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.722/206.80, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.717/206.70, Was #19

Gaines' Stratus is quickly out of the groove and it costs him.

Enders improves a tad and moves up to #20.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.637/209.36, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.704/208.30, Was #18
Right Lane: Gordie Rivera No Time, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.687/205.66, Was #17

This is Rivera's 3oth trip to Pomona. He first came here in 1974. It's all over in ten feet, as the car squats and move abruptly towards the wall.

Morgan improves the tune up enough to just slide into the bump spot for now in his last outing in a Dodge Stratus. Warren Johnson is now out, but will be up next.

Larry Morgan's incremental times: 60ft-1.006 sec., 330ft-2.794, 660ft-4.280/165.74 mph, 1,000ft-5.559.

Left Lane: Dave Northrop Runs 6.616/208.81, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.630/208.68, Was #15
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.639/208.81, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.639/208.68, Was #17

Last chance for Johnson and it's not good enough. He repeats his earlier best to the thousandths to stay #17.

No one is left to bump into the field. Just jockeying for position for the rest of the field.

Big move for Northrop up the ladder into the new #10 spot.

Dave Northrop's incremental times: 60ft-0.985 sec., 330ft-2.772, 660ft-4.257/165.97 mph, 1,000ft-5.538.
Warren Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.991 sec., 330ft-2.782, 660ft-4.273/165.44 mph, 1,000ft-5.558.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.620/208.68, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.629/208.91, Was #15
Right Lane: Rickie Jones Runs 13.796/63.56, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.628/208.71, Was #14

Coughlin gets a great pass to move him off the bottom of the ladder and into the #11 spot.

Jones fires and falls back.

Jeg Coughlin's incremental times: 60ft-0.982 sec., 330ft-2.771, 660ft-4.261/165.56 mph, 1,000ft-5.542.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.615/209.26, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.622/209.36, Was #13
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 6.606/209.17, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.627/209.07, Was #14

Gray gets into the top half of the field and Johnson misses by 0.005. Nice looking runs.

Kurt Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.989 sec., 330ft-2.774, 660ft-4.259/166.03 mph, 1,000ft-5.538.
Johnny Gray's incremental times: 60ft-0.980 sec., 330ft-2.762, 660ft-4.248/166.07 mph, 1,000ft-5.528.

Left Lane: Rodger Brogdon Runs 6.613/208.65, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.621/208.78, Was #14
Right Lane: Ryan Ondrejko No Time, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.615/208.14, Was #11

Ondrejko is pushed by behind the line and won't make a pass.

Brogdon gets a full pull and he misses the top half of the field by 0.003!

Rodger Brogdon's incremental times: 60ft-0.986 sec., 330ft-2.767, 660ft-4.254/165.76 mph, 1,000ft-5.534.

Left Lane: Ronnie Humphrey No Time, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.610/210.11, Was #8
Right Lane: Vinnie Deceglie No Time, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.615/208.75, Was #11

Rookie mistakes for both drivers! Deceglie jumps first and Humphreys quickly follows. No Green, no Times!

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.617/209.07, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.606/209.20, Was #5
Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.604/209.59, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.607/209.36, Was #7

Two good passes and Stanfield improves enough to push Johnson back a spot on the ladder to #6.

Allen Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.975 sec., 330ft-2.767, 660ft-4.256/165.72 mph, 1,000ft-5.537.
Greg Stanfield's incremental times: 60ft-0.987 sec., 330ft-2.767, 660ft-4.251/166.17 mph, 1,000ft-5.528.

Left Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.589/210.01, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.587/209.49, Was #3
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.615/210.05, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.604/210.18, Was #4

The two Summit cars come to the line in the current #3 and #4 position.

Lots of smoke from Line's car down track. Must not of been too bad, as he loses just 0.002 in ET, but picks up some MPH.

Similar situation for Anderson on ET and MPH. They stay in their current positions on two good clean4:10 p.m. runs.

Jason Line's incremental times: 60ft-0.981 sec., 330ft-2.761, 660ft-4.241/166.66 mph, 1,000ft-5.515.
Greg Anderson's incremental times: 60ft-0.994 sec., 330ft-2.779, 660ft-4.262/166.17 mph, 1,000ft-5.539.

Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.562/210.64, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.575/210.31, Was #1
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.618/209.43, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.587/209.69, Was #2

Crushing pass for Edwards to cap the final 2009 Pro Stock qualifying session and, finally, the Championship too. Terrific incrementals take him to the quickest ET and fastest MPH of the meet. Dominant is too weak a word!

Krisher made a good representative pass in the right lane, but was really overshadowed by Edwards.

Mike Edwards' incremental times: 60ft-0.971 sec., 330ft-2.741, 660ft-4.218/166.97 mph, 1,000ft-5.491.
Ron Krisher's incremental times: 60ft-0.991 sec., 330ft-2.779, 660ft-4.265/166.17 mph, 1,000ft-5.542.

4:02 p.m. Larry Morgan is on the bump spot at 6.637.
