Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 45th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.632/208.26, Now #1; Best prior run: 9.929/92.87, Was #22

2:06 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 70 degrees, relative humidity 41 percent, barometer 28.68 inches, adjusted altitude 2,658 feet, track temperature 84 degrees.

Ronnie Humphrey is on the bump spot at 6.663 and Jeg goes from last to frist to set the tone for this round.

Nice 0.986 sixty foot time gives him the new top spot.

Jeg Coughlin's incremental times: 60ft-0.986 sec., 330ft-2.776, 660ft-4.267/165.23 mph, 1,000ft-5.551.

Left Lane: Jim Cunningham Runs 7.409/202.00, Now #23; Best prior run: 7.658/136.23, Was #22
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.671/208.97, Now #15; No Prior Run

Greg Stanfield is on the bump spot at 6.659.

Cunningham's new Mustang bogs and then shakes a bunch and can't improve. Wrong gear at the start?

Krisher gets a full pass this time and squeeks into the field for now. Not likely to last.

Left Lane: Erica Enders Runs 6.753/204.08, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.798/203.34, Was #22
Right Lane: Danny Gruninger Runs 7.701/123.44, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.792/202.97, Was #21

Two clean passes, but just not enough HP to qualify. They swap spots on the ladder.

Left Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.713/205.69, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.739/204.63, Was #20
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.676/206.76, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.737/205.13, Was #19

No joy for these two either. No problems, just not enough improvements.

Left Lane: Dave Northrop Runs 6.637/207.85, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.698/206.26, Was #18
Right Lane: Gordie Rivera Runs 6.728/205.72, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.725/205.01, Was #20

Northrop makes the most of the run and its a good one to move him all the way up to the new #3 position and reset the bump.

Rivera has a 0.982 sixty foot time and can't leverage it into a qualifying position.

Dave Northrop's incremental times: 60ft-0.983 sec., 330ft-2.779, 660ft-4.270/165.42 mph, 1,000ft-5.554.
Gordie Rivera's incremental times: 60ft-0.982 sec., 330ft-2.808, 660ft-4.327/162.47 mph, 1,000ft-5.631.

Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.658/208.97, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.671/207.88, Was #17

Allen Johnson is on the bump spot at 6.658.

Great pass for Humphrey to shoot up to the new top spot.

Johnson misses bumping back in, but not by much.

Ronnie Humphrey's incremental times: 60ft-0.995 sec., 330ft-2.785, 660ft-4.271/165.70 mph, 1,000ft-5.553.
Warren Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.001 sec., 330ft-2.800, 660ft-4.293/165.23 mph, 1,000ft-5.577.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.611/208.78, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.658/207.88, Was #14
Right Lane: Rickie Jones Runs 6.641/208.49, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.665/207.75, Was #16

...and the hits keep coming.

The left lane produces another move from outside the field into the top spot. Its Johnson this time in the Mopar Stratus.

Jones' "new engine" is producing well and moves his Dodge into the top half of the field.

Allen Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.971 sec., 330ft-2.759, 660ft-4.248/165.58 mph, 1,000ft-5.531.
Rickie Jones' incremental times: 60ft-0.982 sec., 330ft-2.779, 660ft-4.273/165.05 mph, 1,000ft-5.558.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 9.999/85.20, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.655/207.94, Was #13
Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.632/209.26, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.659/208.26, Was #16

Jason Line is on the bump spot at 6.655.

Morgan almost crosses the center line near the 330 mark, after a slow 1.000 sixty foot time.

Stanfield started the session in #16 and jumps all the way up the ladder to the current #2 spot. Nice pass!

Greg Stanfield's incremental times: 60ft-0.992 sec., 330ft-2.782, 660ft-4.271/165.58 mph, 1,000ft-5.552.

Left Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.630/208.91, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.655/208.62, Was #13
Right Lane: Ryan Ondrejko Runs 6.635/208.07, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.657/207.21, Was #15

Kurt Johnson is on the bump spot at 6.653.

Both cars use the good air and track conditions to move from outside the field into the top half of the field. Line to #2.

Jason Line's incremental times: 60ft-0.979 sec., 330ft-2.778, 660ft-4.269/165.36 mph, 1,000ft-5.551.
Ryan Ondrejko's incremental times: 60ft-0.979 sec., 330ft-2.770, 660ft-4.264/165.25 mph, 1,000ft-5.550.

Right Lane: Vinnie Deceglie Runs 6.655/208.20, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.652/207.88, Was #13

Johnny Gray is on the bump spot at 6.649.

Two so-so runs and they swap spots on the ladder, still short of the bump spot.

Kurt Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-1.001 sec., 330ft-2.795, 660ft-4.287/165.33 mph, 1,000ft-5.570.
Vinnie Deceglie's incremental times: 60ft-0.984 sec., 330ft-2.784, 660ft-4.282/164.71 mph, 1,000ft-5.570.

Left Lane: Rodger Brogdon Runs 6.621/208.78, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.648/207.72, Was #11
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 6.642/208.91, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.649/208.01, Was #12

Brogdon clicked it early yesterday to give the brakes a good test, after problems at Vegas II.

It's a full pull this time and a good one into the new #2 position on the ladder. Nice clean pass.

Gray picks up a little to move off the bump spot.

Rodger Brogdon's incremental times: 60ft-0.988 sec., 330ft-2.773, 660ft-4.259/165.68 mph, 1,000ft-5.541.
Johnny Gray's incremental times: 60ft-0.988 sec., 330ft-2.784, 660ft-4.276/165.40 mph, 1,000ft-5.561.

Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.575/210.31, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.637/209.46, Was #8
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.630/209.72, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.647/206.20, Was #12

Greg Anderson is on the bump spot at 6.647 and Edwards is number eight.

But not for long. Edwards just puts another nail in thePro Stock coffin, with a 0.973 sixty foot time and then runs it on down to run our first fifty of the weekend.

Anderson does what he has to and makes a strong pass into the final #4 position of the round.

2:30 p.m. Johnny Gray is on the bump spot at 6.642.
