Pro Stock Motorcycle Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 45th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Dawn Matthews-Baugues Runs 7.697/175.14, Now #22; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Katie Sullivan Runs 7.446/180.55, Now #21; No Prior Run

1:38 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 68 degrees, relative humidity 51 percent, barometer 28.70 inches, adjusted altitude 2,518 feet, track temperature 84 degrees.

The two ladies made clean runs, but those numbers won't make the field. Bailey Whitaker is on the bump spot at 7.142.

Left Lane: Craig Treble Runs 7.049/188.96, Now #5; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Matt Smith Runs 7.077/187.03, Now #9; Best prior run: 25.174/66.14, Was #23

Two nice runs to shake up the field. Now Junior Pippin is on the bump spot at 7.126.

Left Lane: Joe DeSantis Runs 7.186/189.47, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.195/185.92, Was #18
Right Lane: Douglas Horne Runs 6.989/191.54, Now #3; Best prior run: 7.421/188.83, Was #22

DeSantis' bike wagged its rear tire a few times early in the run, but he settled it down - still missed the field. Horne made a very nice run, the fourth "six" of the weekend. Now Larry Cook is on the bump spot at 7.094.

Left Lane: Redell Harris Runs 7.163/185.23, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.167/184.57, Was #18
Right Lane: Rhett Lougheed No Time, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.368/178.90, Was #22

Lougheed's bike went hard left and he took out the 330-foot marker. Harris made a slightly better run than yesterday, but he still came up short.

Left Lane: Freddie Camarena Runs 7.050/192.03, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.142/187.44, Was #14
Right Lane: Gary Moreno Runs 7.299/179.71, Now #21; Best prior run: 7.266/181.25, Was #21

Our info on Moreno yesterday was not correct - he actually made his Pro Stock Motorcycle debut here in 1990 and made the field. He also tried to qualify in 1991, missed the field, but ran as an alternate.

Camarena made a career-best run at Las Vegas and he bettered that one on this run, moving all the way up to the top half of the field (for now). Moreno failed to improve.

Left Lane: Junior Pippin Runs 7.168/188.15, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.126/189.36, Was #14
Right Lane: James Surber Runs 7.238/184.50, Now #20; Best prior run: 7.219/182.11, Was #20

No help for either rider.

Left Lane: Larry Cook Runs 6.987/188.96, Now #3; Best prior run: 7.094/185.51, Was #13
Right Lane: Eddie Krawiec Runs 6.995/193.13, Now #5; Best prior run: 7.164/192.00, Was #18

Cook bumped back into the field with career-best numbers, beating Krawiec. Krawiec also moved into the sixes, also bumping into the field. Now Jim Underdahl is on the bump spot at 7.075.

Left Lane: David Hope Runs 7.050/187.08, Now #10; Best prior run: 7.054/188.41, Was #10
Right Lane: Mike Berry Runs 7.129/186.05, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.160/184.04, Was #17

Hope improved slightly, stayed tenth. Berry also improved slightly, but not enough to make the cut.

Left Lane: Michael Phillips Runs 7.022/192.47, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.021/193.54, Was #7
Right Lane: Bailey Whitaker Runs 7.116/181.35, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.142/183.97, Was #17

Phillips' bike wiggled a bit early in the run. He failed to improve, by a thousandth. Whitaker gave it a good try, improved slightly, but came up short.

Left Lane: Hector Arana Runs 7.091/189.28, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.997/189.71, Was #6
Right Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 13.665/57.88, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.086/187.73, Was #14

Johnson spun the tire, wiggled hard, and shut off. Arana also had some early wiggles, scrubbing off a lot of time, and he failed to improve.

Left Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 7.469/192.19, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.986/192.33, Was #2
Right Lane: Jim Underdahl Runs 7.117/191.08, Now #12; Best prior run: 7.075/190.57, Was #12

Hines' bike spun the tire and shook on the launch, killing his momentum. Underdahl also fought the bike early in the run.

Left Lane: Karen Stoffer Runs 7.037/191.38, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.982/191.70, Was #1
Right Lane: Shawn Gann Runs 7.021/176.05, Now #8; Best prior run: 7.063/188.81, Was #11

Last pair. Two okay runs, but Stoffer lost ground, while Gann moved up a couple spots.

The bonus points go to Cook (3), Horne (2) and Krawiec (1) for this session.
