CONCORD, N.C. -- Over the last seven races, Jason Line's Summit Racing Pontiac was one of the most consistent and highest performing cars in the NHRA's Pro Stock category, advancing to the semifinals or better with two wins in five final round appearances. It was a streak the Terrell, NC resident looked to continue during Sunday's final eliminat ions of the Carolinas Nationals, the first stop in the Countdown to One championship playoff.

Starting from the fifth position, Line got off to a tremendous start at zMAX Dragway, using the second quickest winning time of the opening round at 6.629 seconds with a top speed of 209.01 to trailer rival Jeg Coughlin, who was the No. 1 seed coming into the playoffs. In the quarterfinals against Allen Johnson, however, Line was slowed by violent tire shake almost immediately after launching, and although he was able to recover and make a representative 6.688-second, 208.81 mph run, it was not enough to overcome his opponent's 6.644-second, 207.85 mph effort.

"We got off to a great start with our Summit Racing Pontiac today, taking out the points leader in round one," said Line. "Unfortunately, we weren't able to capitalize on it. In the second round agai nst AJ, the car shook the tires so hard that I really should have aborted the run. However, I've learned that anything can happen in this sport, so I kept my foot to the floor in case he broke, but he didn't and our day was done.

"The important thing is that we learn from this experience. I can't really explain why we didn't run as well as we should have this weekend. At this point all we can do is keep working, trying to regain the consistency we had a few races ago. I still believe in this KB Racing team - we have the people and the parts in place. We just have to do a little better job, starting next week in Dallas."
