CONCORD, N.C. -- The best part of the weekend for Mike Knowles has been the fact that his '63 Corvette is running like he always knew it would, blasting to the No. 2 qualifying spot in the Get Screened America Pro Mod Challenge at the NHRA Carolinas Nationals. The hardest part was defeating his close friend Tim Tindle in the opening round of eliminations. Knowles landed No. 2 with his 5.938 at 240.81 mph lap in the final round of qualifying Saturday afternoon. He was paired against his friend, No. 15 Tim Tindle, who had been struggling all weekend to get the setup on his car dialed in. When the two faced off, Knowles blasted straight down the quarter-mile at zMAX Dragway with a 5.962 at 240.94 to Tindle's tire-shaking 7.725 at 132.32. "He and I are good friends, and that's the worst thing that can happen in round one. You're excited when you run good and win first round, but when you beat your buddy, it takes some of the fun out of it," Knowles said "We ran really good even though it shook right at the top of low gear. We're in really good shape, though. Now we just have to go and win some more rounds. "We want to go down and just keep duplicating our successes. At the end of the racetrack, Tim and I joked, and everything is fine, although I'm sure he wanted to beat me just as bad as I wanted to beat him. The friendship is there, but we're all trying to get into the MATCO Tools Clash, and that means we're racing each other to do that. This is racing, and we all know there's going to be a winner, and a loser. "Tomorrow, we'll just keep doing what we're doing, and see what happens," Knowles said.
