Top Fuel Time Trial Notes, Session #3
By Larry Sullivan

CLERMONT, Ind. - Notes from round 3 time trials in Top Fuel at the NHRA, Indianapolis Test Session Day 2 listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 8.896/0.00, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.004/0.00, Was #6

1:02 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 58 percent, barometer 29.20 inches, adjusted altitude 2,991 feet, track temperature 113 degrees.

Bernstein's rear tires went up in smoke as they passed the Christmas tree. Brandon Bernstein's incremental times: 60ft-0.857 sec., 330ft-3.112, 660ft-6.018/080.49 mph.

Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 3.976/0.00, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.160/0.00, Was #8

1:05 p.m. Cory Mac's run looked better than the clocks indicated - his half-track speed was down a bit and he may have dropped a cylinder. Cory McClenathan's incremental times: 60ft-0.843 sec., 330ft-2.186, 660ft-3.155/259.46 mph.

Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 4.649/0.00, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.865/0.00, Was #2

1:17 p.m. Lucas got further than most lately, but lost traction before half track. Morgan Lucas' incremental times: 60ft-0.853 sec., 330ft-2.185, 660ft-3.317/190.59 mph.

Left Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 4.034/0.00, Now #4; Best prior run: 3.905/0.00, Was #4

1:20 p.m. Langdon avoided traction problems, but sacrificed an engine just before half track, trailimg flames and smoke the rest of the way. Shawn Langdon's incremental times: 60ft-0.848 sec., 330ft-2.199, 660ft-3.170/258.67 mph. Looks like there was a little "juice" in addition to the flames and smoke, so we'll be down for a bit.

Left Lane: Ron August Jr. Runs 4.251/0.00, Now #8; No Prior Run

1:40 p.m. Back from the oildown and the mystery is solved. The mystery driver is Ron August, Jr., a Division 7 Top Alcohol Funny Car regular, making Top Fuel license runs - and his TAFC number is 727. This was a good, clean run, as was his first today. I'm not sure what the 1,000-foot licensing requirements are, and I'm not sure how they will verify the speed, but both the runs looked like they should count. Ron August Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-0.918 sec., 330ft-2.357, 660ft-3.385/245.99 mph.

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.998/0.00, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.413/0.00, Was #9

1:46 p.m. David Grubnic may be driving Doug Kalitta's car, we're not sure. This run looked good, but the driver shut off before the 660-foot markers. Doug Kalitta's incremental times: 60ft-0.870 sec., 330ft-2.232, 660ft-3.483/169.25 mph.

Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 6.804/0.00, Now #1; No Prior Run

1:54 p.m. Schumacher left hard, lost traction after about 200 feet. Tony Schumacher's incremental times: 60ft-0.853 sec., 330ft-2.371, 660ft-4.333/106.02 mph.

Left Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 4.632/0.00, Now #3; Best prior run: 3.879/0.00, Was #3

1:57 p.m. Massey got about 500 feet before losing traction. Spencer Massey's incremental times: 60ft-0.873 sec., 330ft-2.222, 660ft-3.334/197.02 mph.

Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 3.981/0.00, Now #5; Best prior run: 3.950/0.00, Was #5

2:00 p.m. Hartley is not only just behind Millican in the points, he's right behind him in the staging lanes. Millican gave Hartley something to shoot at, making the best run lately. Clay Millican's incremental times: 60ft-0.871 sec., 330ft-2.232, 660ft-3.183/268.12 mph.

Left Lane: Joe Hartley Runs 9.780/0.00, Now #10; Best prior run: 7.633/0.00, Was #10

2:07 p.m. Hartley was unable to answer the challenge, his rear tires up in smoke halfway to the Christmas tree. Joe Hartley's incremental times: 60ft-0.913 sec., 330ft-3.391, 660ft-6.547/070.94 mph.

Left Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 4.536/0.00, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.004/0.00, Was #6

2:34 p.m. Bernstein got about 300 feet, then lost traction. Brandon Bernstein's incremental times: 60ft-0.869 sec., 330ft-2.213, 660ft-3.291/204.14 mph.
