COMMERCE, Ga. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 29th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run: Left Lane: Luigi Novelli Runs 4.220/284.81, Now #18; Best prior run: 4.180/296.96, Was #18 3:29 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 77 degrees, relative humidity 25 percent, barometer 29.37 inches, adjusted altitude 2,215 feet, track temperature 111 degrees. Todd Paton is on the bump spot at 4.038. Novelli made a clean, straight
run, just not a quick one, and his weekend is over. Left Lane: Joe Hartley Runs 3.959/304.19, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.087/291.95, Was #17 Right Lane: Todd Paton Runs 4.181/222.03, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.038/285.05, Was #16 Apparently Chris Karamesines will not make a run today, so one of these two will probably not run tomorrow. Yup, Hartley stepped up and bumped Paton. Paton failed to improve, his car losing traction and a blower belt on the top end. Left Lane: Troy Buff Runs 4.910/145.16, Now #16; Best prior run: 3.997/259.91, Was #16 Right Lane: Bobby Lagana Jr. Runs 6.200/98.06, Now #15; Best prior run: 3.976/304.19, Was #15 The field is determined and they are now racing for pairings and lane choice. Hartley just pushed these two onto the bottom rungs of the ladder, then they had to sit and wait while the Safety Safari cleaned up some stuff in the shutdown area. The
wait wasn't long and neither was either run - both cars lost traction before the 660-foot marker, Lagana first, then Buff. Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 10.088/74.17, Now #13; Best prior run: 3.958/304.32, Was #13 A couple teams elected not to run this session, so McMillen ended up without a dancing partner. He lost traction almost immediately. Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 3.901/307.86, Now #10; Best prior run: 3.920/300.86, Was #12 Right Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 7.535/81.09, Now #8; Best prior run: 3.886/305.36, Was #8 Langdon also lost traction early in the run, but Cory Mac stepped up with his best run of the weekend. Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 3.932/306.88, Now #12; Best prior run: 3.917/311.92, Was #12 Right Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 5.341/124.26, Now #7; Best prior run: 3.881/310.98, Was #7 Millican's car owner, Mark Pickens is in the final round of the Top Sportsman Invitational. Dixon lost traction before
half track, Millican made a full pass (only his second of the weekend), nothing changed. Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.243/210.90, Now #9; Best prior run: 3.891/310.41, Was #9 Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 3.868/311.99, Now #5; Best prior run: 3.867/311.63, Was #5 Kalitta lost traction around half track. Brown made another good run, posting a 3.86 on three out of his four attempts (the second run yesterday was a tire-smoker). Left Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 3.824/311.49, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.859/315.64, Was #4 Right Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 4.371/185.41, Now #3; Best prior run: 3.844/308.21, Was #2 Lucas lost traction around half track and Bernstein stepped up to move around him on the ladder, taking over the second spot. Like Brown, Bernstein has been quick on three of his four runs so far, his second run yesterday also a tire-smoker. Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 6.894/84.29, Now #4; Best prior run: 3.851/306.19, Was #4 Right Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 3.899/303.09, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.820/311.20, Was #1 Last pair. In addition to Karamesines, Bob Vandergriff and Terry Haddock skipped this final session. These two came in
with three good runs in their first three tries, but only Massey was able to make it four-for-four. Schumacher was up in smoke
before half track. Massey could not match his run earlier today, but his earlier run held up and he gets the first #1 qualifier of
his career, his prior best a #2 at Gainesville. He will face Troy Buff in the first round of eliminations tomorrow.
