Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By Larry Sullivan

COMMERCE, Ga. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 29th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Luigi Novelli Runs 4.180/296.96, Now #13; Best prior run: 8.993/89.82, Was #13

12:51 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 28 percent, barometer 29.45 inches, adjusted altitude 2,024 feet, track temperature 95 degrees.

Clean,. straight pass by Novelli, with a career-best 1,000-foot speed for him.

Right Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 3.859/315.64, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.866/310.48, Was #2

Bernstein is already second on the ladder, but gets an early spot in the qualifying order because he had a bad run in the second session yesterday and the run order for this session is set using times from that session. There is a light cloud cover, so the fuel cars should run well in this session.

Nice solo pass, clean and straight, all eight cylinders lit all the way.

Left Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 3.886/305.36, Now #7; Best prior run: 3.912/305.98, Was #9
Right Lane: Troy Buff Runs 3.997/259.91, Now #12; No Prior Run

Both lanes were about the same for the Pro Stock cars and appeared about even for the fuel cars yesterday, again the track grinding giving the drivers a good racing surface this weekend. Throw in the new-look sand trap and the fans should get a good, safe show this weekend.

Two nice-looking runs, but Buff's car trailed a lot of tires smoke through the lights. It looked like it might be more than tire smoke, but the track was clean and dry - "Fire the next pair."

Left Lane: Antron Brown Runs 3.867/311.63, Now #3; Best prior run: 3.869/310.13, Was #3
Right Lane: Joe Hartley Runs 4.087/291.95, Now #14; No Prior Run

Brown also had problems in the second session, so gets an early spot in the run order for today.

Two more clean, straight runs, Hartley with a dead cylinder from the git-go. Brown almost duplicated his best run from yesterday, with a better speed.

Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 3.885/303.37, Now #5; Best prior run: 3.881/310.98, Was #5
Right Lane: Clay Millican Runs 3.917/311.92, Now #11; No Prior Run

Millican has smoked the tires on both attempts this weekend, Dixon did the same on his second effort.

Both cars went down the track, side-by-side, but the numbers weren't as good as the runs looked visually.

Right Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 3.920/300.86, Now #12; No Prior Run

Bobby Lagana was supposed to run in the left lane, elected to skip this run since they were safely in the field and run on a tight budget. Cory Mac was not in the top twelve yesterday and had no choice.

This was a "good run" because it put McClenathan solidly in the field, but it's probably not what they were hoping for. With 19 cars here, three teams will be packing up tonight.

Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 3.958/304.32, Now #13; No Prior Run

Again, not spectacular, but a safe run that run bumps Joe Hartley from the field. Now Todd Paton is on the bump spot at 4.038. He elected to skip this session, but there's nobody left in line who can bump him out.

Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 3.851/306.19, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.884/309.98, Was #6

Nice run, best of the session, straight and smooth. Tony Schumacher's incremental times: 60ft-0.843 sec., 330ft-2.160, 660ft-3.071/278.58 mph. He dropped a cylinder late in the run, killing some speed.

Left Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 3.820/311.20, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.910/307.44, Was #9
Right Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.866/148.36, Now #9; Best prior run: 3.891/310.41, Was #8

Kalitta's car spun the tires and appeared to drop a cylinder fairly early in the run. Massey made a nice, smooth, straight pass and moved right to the head of the list. Spencer Massey's incremental times: 60ft-0.832 sec., 330ft-2.138, 660ft-3.047/278.12 mph.

Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 3.863/310.70, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.844/308.21, Was #2
Right Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 3.880/309.34, Now #6; Best prior run: 3.878/314.39, Was #6

Lucas sat in the staging lanes and watched as Massey "stole" the #1 spot from him. He made a good run, but failed to improve and Massey goes into the final qualifying session atop the ladder. Meanwhile, Vandergriff has a quick bracket car, this run fitting neatly in between the first two, both ET and speed.
