Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By Larry Sullivan

COMMERCE, Ga. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 29th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Erica Enders Runs 6.731/204.48, Now #13; No Prior Run

12:09 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 29 percent, barometer 29.47 inches, adjusted altitude 1,977 feet, track temperature 94 degrees.

Yesterday the drivers were hoping this session would see better conditions than yesterday, but the air temperature rose quicker than expected and it's close, but not better. We won't have a bump time until four non-qualified cars have run...

Enders made a good run, but that time won't hold up long.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 14.938/55.58, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.599/209.14, Was #6
Right Lane: Ronnie Humphrey Runs 6.640/208.46, Now #13; No Prior Run

Gray came up already in sixth spot, but had a bad run in the second session yesterday and the order for this session is based on the times from round 2 qualifying - event though those 13th or lower start off fresh today.

Gray shook hard, two bad runs in a row. Humphrey got down the track okay, but that time may not be good enough either.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.638/208.81, Now #13; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Dave Northrop No Time, Now #20; No Prior Run

Northrop was pushed away after the burnout, leaving a small trail of "stuff" on the launch pad. KJ made a full pass, but it wasn't as quick or fast as expected and he may have to make a last-ditch effort this afternoon.

Left Lane: Rodger Brogdon Runs 6.624/208.94, Now #10; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.629/207.98, Now #14; No Prior Run

Two more qualify, bumping Enders. We now have a bump time and Ronnie Humphrey is on the bump spot at 6.640.

Left Lane: John Gaydosh Jr Runs 6.769/203.61, Now #19; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Rickie Jones Runs 6.616/208.94, Now #10; No Prior Run

Gaydosh's car made a big wiggle on the launch. Jones made a nice run, bumping Humphrey. That puts Kurt Johnson on the bump spot at 6.638.

Left Lane: Justin Humphreys Runs 6.692/206.45, Now #18; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.574/209.69, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.629/209.46, Was #14

Humphreys is the last driver with a shot at bumping KJ from the field. He came up way short, but Krisher showed that the conditions will support a very good run, moving all the way up to the second spot. Ron Krisher's incremental times: 60ft-0.982 sec., 330ft-2.753, 660ft-4.229/167.63 mph, 1,000ft-5.501. The 16-car field is set for this session and KJ is sixteenth.

Left Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 6.626/208.55, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.625/208.65, Was #13
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.617/207.88, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.625/208.26, Was #14

Good-looking runs in both lanes, Gaines with an awesome 0.974 60-foot time.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.604/209.14, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.613/208.78, Was #9
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.598/211.26, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.615/210.14, Was #10

WJ has been in all 29 of the Southern Nationals.

Morgan had a nice 0.979 60-foot time, improves, stays ninth. WJ had a very good (for him) 0.997 and reset the track speed record, moving four rungs up the ladder.

Warren Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.997 sec., 330ft-2.778, 660ft-4.257/167.80 mph, 1,000ft-5.528.

Left Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.581/210.01, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.599/209.75, Was #7
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.578/210.14, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.610/209.85, Was #10

Both had great short times and both ran big speeds, moving up the ladder.

Greg Stanfield's incremental times: 60ft-0.975 sec., 330ft-2.752, 660ft-4.232/166.64 mph, 1,000ft-5.507.
Jeg Coughlin's incremental times: 60ft-0.978 sec., 330ft-2.753, 660ft-4.233/167.24 mph, 1,000ft-5.505.

Left Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.570/211.13, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.582/210.70, Was #6
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.582/208.94, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.588/209.85, Was #7

Two more great short times, AJ the quickest of the session. Huge speeds once again, Line joining WJ in the elite 211 mph club.

Jason Line's incremental times: 60ft-0.976 sec., 330ft-2.754, 660ft-4.230/167.20 mph, 1,000ft-5.500.
Allen Johnson's incremental times: 60ft-0.967 sec., 330ft-2.743, 660ft-4.225/166.91 mph, 1,000ft-5.504.

Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.557/210.93, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.568/210.77, Was #1
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.565/210.28, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.578/210.11, Was #5

In case you missed the news reports, the racing surface here was ground smooth during the off-season and the Pro Stock times and speeds reflect that smoothness.

Huge runs, Anderson resetting the track ET record once again (but WJ hangs on to9 the speed mark. ) Edwards got to the line first and beat Anderson's track record from yesterday, but only held the record for a hundredth of a second, so the track ET record was broken twice in less than the blink of an eye.

With one qualifying session left, Anderson stays #1 and Kurt Johnson is on the bump spot at 6.638.
