Competition Eliminator Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Darryl Jackman

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Competition Eliminator at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, 25th annual Lucas Oil Slick Mist NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed this round, amount over/under index this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time, speed & over/under Index, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Frank Nelson Runs 7.411/177.37/0.301, Now #26; A/A Index: 7.11, Prior Best: 7.250/191.70/0.140, Was #26
Right Lane: Bill Kent Runs 7.788/126.96/0.288, Now #27; C/D Index: 7.50, Prior Best: 12.338/66.36/4.838, Was #29

3:42 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 75 degrees, relative humidity 16 percent, barometer 28.79 inches, adjusted altitude 2,685 feet, track temperature 101 degrees.

Comp is out for the second of their two hits today. Kent picked up from the first session but the car still had problems after half track. Nelson's problems continue as he slows from his first run.

Left Lane: Clark Smiley Runs 8.242/162.94/-0.438, Now #12; B/SM Index: 8.68, Prior Best: 8.144/166.54/-0.536, Was #12
Right Lane: Joe Mozeris Runs 7.102/184.57/-0.468, Now #17; C/DA Index: 7.57, Prior Best: 7.081/188.02/-0.489, Was #17

Mozeris car was putting out a bunch of smoke in the first round of qualifying and here the smoke disappears but car slowed down. Now that's odd. Smiley slows a tenth. What's going on here?

Left Lane: Shane Gray Runs 6.977/196.16/-0.623, Now #5; B/A Index: 7.60, Prior Best: 6.999/196.10/-0.601, Was #6
Right Lane: Dean Howerton Runs 7.130/188.49/-0.370, Now #20; C/D Index: 7.50, Prior Best: 7.128/191.08/-0.372, Was #20

Johnny Gray's son, Shane, stages for his second run of the event. Gray picks up about .02 and one spot in the field. Howerton slows from his first.

Left Lane: Will Hatcher Runs 6.640/205.72/-0.500, Now #13; A/DA Index: 7.14, Prior Best: 6.614/205.79/-0.526, Was #13
Right Lane: Bob Hass Runs 7.165/191.81/-0.475, Now #16; B/AA Index: 7.64, Prior Best: 7.138/192.88/-0.502, Was #16

No help for either driver.

Left Lane: Matt Hartford Runs 8.939/104.88/1.899, Now #25; A/D Index: 7.04, Prior Best: 7.055/164.95/0.015, Was #25
Right Lane: Ray Goodman Runs 7.551/170.99/-0.319, Now #21; A/EA Index: 7.87, Prior Best: 7.539/173.92/-0.331, Was #21

Hartford got his brains shaken out by the 'A' Dragster. Goodman fails to improve as well.

Left Lane: Thomas Shambaugh Runs 7.928/176.28/0.028, Now #26; DD/AT Index: 7.90, Prior Best: 8.432/173.03/0.532, Was #29
Right Lane: Pat Byron Runs 7.005/192.28/-0.495, Now #11; C/D Index: 7.50, Prior Best: 6.959/181.59/-0.541, Was #11

Shambaugh spools up the turbo and takes a half a second off his time from round 1, not that it helped a lot. He picks up three spots to #26. Byron slows.

Left Lane: Alan Ellis Runs 6.725/201.37/-0.535, Now #13; A/AP Index: 7.26, Prior Best: 13.043/91.79/5.783, Was #31
Right Lane: Steve Holloway Runs 9.594/93.36/2.424, Now #24; A/AA Index: 7.17, Prior Best: 6.996/205.69/-0.174, Was #23

Ellis must have found his problems as he goes from the bottom of the field to #13. Holloway actually drops a spot in the show.

Left Lane: Lee Sharp Runs 8.406/160.98/-0.564, Now #8; D/SMA Index: 8.97, Prior Best: 8.400/161.36/-0.570, Was #8
Right Lane: Steve Graham Runs 7.520/179.66/-0.460, Now #19; C/A Index: 7.98, Prior Best: 7.539/0.00/-0.441, Was #19

Slight improvement for Graham but a slight drop off for Sharp.

Left Lane: Art Hodges No Time, Now #31; A/PM Index: 7.07, Prior Best: 12.846/85.90/5.776, Was #31
Right Lane: John Edwards No Time, Now #6; C/AA Index: 7.99, Prior Best: 7.381/182.55/-0.609, Was #6

Hodges had a problem getting the power to the track in the first round and here he runs a great number but the car moved over and took out a cone at the finish. This invalidated both times as Hodges hit the cone and stopped Edwards time as well.

Left Lane: Dean Carter Runs 6.998/188.49/-0.572, Now #7; B/ND Index: 7.57, Prior Best: 6.971/189.34/-0.599, Was #7
Right Lane: Brian Browell Runs 7.302/182.60/-0.518, Now #10; D/D Index: 7.82, Prior Best: 7.272/180.89/-0.548, Was #10

Carter made a great run in the first round but the B/ND index is getting tougher and tougher. He slows .02 and remains #7. Browell slows and remains #10.

Left Lane: Todd Patterson Runs 7.747/175.41/-0.613, Now #4; E/A Index: 8.36, Prior Best: 7.730/176.65/-0.630, Was #4
Right Lane: Justin Lamb Runs 8.850/150.05/-0.510, Now #17; G/SMA Index: 9.36, Prior Best: 8.970/127.65/-0.390, Was #20

Lamb becomes one of the few to really improve as he finds over a tenth from his first hit. Patterson slows from his best.

Left Lane: Scott Hedlund Runs 7.796/172.98/-0.614, Now #3; A/SM Index: 8.41, Prior Best: 7.776/173.21/-0.634, Was #3
Right Lane: Jim Cowan Runs 8.262/151.54/-0.528, Now #14; I/AA Index: 8.79, Prior Best: 8.280/146.43/-0.510, Was #16

Cowan picks off a couple of spots but Hedlund stands pat on his first round numbers.

Left Lane: Tom Mettler Runs 7.454/182.23/-0.556, Now #9; PST Index: 8.01, Prior Best: 7.461/182.30/-0.549, Was #9
Right Lane: Clint Neff Runs 15.923/49.57/7.373, Now #1; K/A Index: 8.55, Prior Best: 7.893/166.68/-0.657, Was #1

Neff bounced around and went to #1 in the first round of qualifying. He did it again here but this time the movement was so violent he had to lift off the loud pedal. Mettler improves slightly but remains #9.

Left Lane: Mike DePalma Runs 8.126/165.25/-0.644, Now #2; I/A Index: 8.77, Prior Best: 8.121/165.23/-0.649, Was #2
Right Lane: Doug Lambeck Runs 8.427/158.93/-0.543, Now #11; D/SMA Index: 8.97, Prior Best: 8.445/158.39/-0.525, Was #16

DePalma just about duplicates his first run and he remains #2. Lambeck picks up .02 and five spots in the show.

Right Lane: Dan Fletcher Runs 8.186/135.62/-0.454, Now #21; C/EA Index: 8.64, Prior Best: 8.653/112.45/0.013, Was #25

Fletcher legged this one a bit further than he did in the first round but was still coasting well before the finishline. That's all for the second round of Comp qualifying. I believe Pro Stock is next.
