Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By Darryl Jackman

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 44th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.017/150.70, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.122/301.67, Was #6
Right Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.203/292.71, Now #13; No Prior Run

12:01 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 16 percent, barometer 28.94 inches, adjusted altitude 2,794 feet, track temperature 101 degrees.

Strange flames out of T.Ped's racer spelled the end of his effort here in the third round. Bode's run wasn't great but it puts him in for the moment.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 6.969/96.96, Now #15; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.167/287.17, Now #10; No Prior Run

Arend is now down to his final shot as round three went up in smoke before the 330ft mark. C.Ped finally gets a fair number on the sheet and will be in at #10.

Left Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 4.468/216.83, Now #15; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Del Worsham No Time, Now #18; No Prior Run

This will be the final weekend for Bartone in Jim Dunn's Canidae Pet Food sponsored Funny Car. It was announced today that he will be replaced by Jerry Toliver. Worsham lost the burst panel about 200ft out and that also deployed the parachutes as well. He rolled to a stop well before the finish line. Bartone had the pipes go wet well before the lights. He is in the show for the moment, but don't blink.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.151/300.33, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.169/297.02, Was #11
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.156/292.14, Now #9; No Prior Run

This run is big for both drivers. Wilkerson led the points almost all season but gave it up to C.Ped in Vegas. Beckman lost a lost of ground to the leader in Vegas and needs to pull inside of three rounds before eliminations. About identical runs here and while they are safe, not really what they were hoping for.

Left Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.149/297.16, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.121/302.01, Was #5
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 6.664/95.86, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.122/298.14, Was #7

Another busted run for Hight and he's only managed one out of three at this point. Scelzi slows a tiny bit but he still must be happy with the cars consistency. Both remain in the top half of the field.

Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 6.733/96.03, Now #17; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 6.470/99.68, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.187/296.63, Was #14

Not much to show for the burned nitro in this pair. Both cars smoked the tires before 200ft and only Head is in the show, based on his run from the second session. Tough season for TJ and team and he remains just outside the qualified field. One to go guys...

Left Lane: Ashley Force Runs 4.127/297.81, Now #8; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 5.644/120.38, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.157/301.13, Was #10

Ugly, nasty run for Toliver. He had the situation well in hand until the left rear wheel and tire parted company from it's home on the race car. A.Force had already gone by Toliver so her car was not in the flight path of the slick as it bounced off the left wall. Toliver slipped and rattled to a stop well past the finishline. No one injured and I'm certain the car can be fixed so that's enough excitement for one day. Watch the broadcast tonight. It'll be worth it! Oh...by the way...A.Force qualified in the top half in her lane. No one really noticed!

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 6.016/107.84, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.176/299.40, Was #14
Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.668/176.47, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.105/299.13, Was #2

Dueling smokers here. Tasca fried'em first and about 100ft later Neff joined in the fun. Neff is still #2 and Tasca, #14.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.251/284.33, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.164/294.43, Was #12
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.138/301.00, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.108/303.78, Was #3

Densham had at least one hole out in the left side of the engine and his result showed it. J.Force had a good looking pass but he remains #3 based on his 4.108 in the second session.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.364/214.93, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.118/302.08, Was #4
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 6.877/89.38, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.105/304.25, Was #1

Troxel falls off the performance wagon here as they over center the tune up and strike the tires about 150ft out. That #1 spot is safe going into the final round as Capps is the last car to make a hit in this session. She'll have the lead going into the final. Capps will stand on his 4.118 and that made him #4 in the second round.
