Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Darryl Jackman

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 44th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Daniel Oliver Runs 5.819/249.53, Now #15; No Prior Run

12:33 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 32 percent, barometer 28.78 inches, adjusted altitude 2,780 feet, track temperature 102 degrees.

Oliver does not repeat his cone bowling competition from Thursday and I'm certain the owner Randy Goodwin is pleased by that. This time the car appeared really soft and remained right down the middle of the lane.

Left Lane: Bernie Harrington Runs 6.663/136.29, Now #21; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Don Hudson Runs 5.695/252.57, Now #7; No Prior Run

There was a loud bang from Harrington's racer that could have only been caused by the supercharger taking offense to the intake charge being fired inside of it. Big oops! He remains unqualified but Hudson moves Oliver down to the bump spot.

Left Lane: Ron August Jr Runs 5.801/251.58, Now #15; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Kebin Kinsley Runs 5.734/254.62, Now #9; No Prior Run

Two different methods to get from A to B. August rode the centerline from beginning to end while Kinsley got extremely close to the wall. Close enough to kick up lots of dust. Both make the show for the moment and Moats and Oliver are both out of the field.

Left Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.769/253.37, Now #13; Best prior run: 13.451/61.73, Was #28
Right Lane: John Patton Runs 8.055/108.54, Now #25; Best prior run: 15.039/56.86, Was #29

Thompson knocks out DJ Cox Jr but Patton used so much of the right lane he decided to click it off to stay there. Really loose!

Left Lane: Bret Williamson Runs 13.469/67.00, Now #29; Best prior run: 10.099/80.54, Was #28
Right Lane: Keeter Ray Runs 5.892/219.54, Now #22; Best prior run: 12.916/61.88, Was #29

Williamson blew the tires off at the hit and that's the first time we've seen that today. Ray just falls short on a good clean, straight run.

Left Lane: Russ Parker Runs 5.948/247.20, Now #25; Best prior run: 8.706/102.07, Was #28
Right Lane: Brian Smith Runs 5.925/240.47, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.167/239.02, Was #24

Parker wanders the lane a bit and will need another session to attempt cracking the show. Smith was straight but just plain slow.

Left Lane: Roger Bateman Runs 14.168/62.72, Now #28; Best prior run: 8.506/90.28, Was #28
Right Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 5.705/252.99, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.850/250.00, Was #21

Bellemeur takes a tenth and a half off his first hit and actually winds up in the top half of the field for now. Good looking run. Bateman is the second car to blow the tires off on the starting line.

Left Lane: Dennis Taylor Runs 9.501/85.42, Now #23; Best prior run: 5.922/241.63, Was #23
Right Lane: Marty Nothstein Runs 5.797/251.77, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.822/253.66, Was #21

Taylor fired and fell back pretty quickly. His early numbers were good: .984 60ft, 2.710 330ft, but after that...not so good. He lifted and watched Nothstein punch his way into the field. Not for though as he is now on the bump.

Left Lane: Vern Moats Runs 5.771/250.32, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.807/249.39, Was #20
Right Lane: DJ Cox Jr. Runs 9.546/101.04, Now #20; Best prior run: 5.802/248.43, Was #19

Cox goes over center in the right lane and strikes the tires instantly. Moats picks up enough to bump Nothstein and put Coolidge on the bubble.

Left Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 5.956/249.86, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.800/251.20, Was #18
Right Lane: Mick Snyder Runs 5.618/255.82, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.754/248.71, Was #13

Ferro just barely stayed in his own lane as he went to the wall at the hit and jerked the car back to the centerline after that. Snyder makes a nice straight pass to push himself all the way to the #3 spot on the ladder. Nice run!

Left Lane: Hank Coolidge Runs 5.759/244.25, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.773/247.11, Was #16
Right Lane: Steve Burck Runs 5.781/250.09, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.745/252.19, Was #12

Burck cards a good looking run but remains #12. Coolidge manages to get some distance between himself and the bump spot, now held down by Moats.

Left Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 5.703/255.00, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.752/255.00, Was #13
Right Lane: Bobby Martin Runs 5.850/198.73, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.687/247.79, Was #7

Martin disappeared behind a wall of smoke and it appears the Safety Safari begins their duties just after half track. O'Bannon takes a nickel improvement and just misses the top half of the show. That was quick. I couldn't even finish typing before the trucks left the race track and went back to their positions...false alarm?

Left Lane: Alexis De Joria Runs 5.699/251.49, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.722/251.72, Was #11
Right Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.638/257.58, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.685/253.61, Was #5

De Joria ties her best ever ET and moves up two spots to #9. That's two great looking runs in a row for her and the team. Hough picks up a nickel and one spot in the show.

Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 8.924/98.95, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.686/257.43, Was #6
Right Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 6.175/173.25, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.671/254.23, Was #5

Gordon shook hard, wandered the lane and the shut off. Gasparrelli banged the blower around 1000ft and coasted on out.

Left Lane: Steve Harker Runs 8.429/99.23, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.569/249.63, Was #1
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 17.055/47.60, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.585/258.17, Was #2

This was pretty ugly. Payne blew the tires off at the hit and Harker was all over the lane before he finally decided that safety ruled! That was the final pair for the session.
