Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 44th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Arley Langlo Runs 4.904/166.72, Now #1

2:57 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 82 degrees, relative humidity 30 percent, barometer 28.80 inches, adjusted altitude 3,299 feet, track temperature 95 degrees.

The track has started to cool off and maybe we can improve on the only fair Funny Car session.

After a nice 0.974 sixty-foot time, Langlo starts to drop cylinders and moves towards the centerline. He gives it up before the 1000 foot.

Left Lane: Mike Strasburg Runs 3.933/308.14, Now #2
Right Lane: Tim Boychuk Runs 3.929/305.49, Now #1

Side by side to the finish line and Strasburg cards a career best ET and Boychuk gets a new best MPH. Nice passes a pair.

Left Lane: Urs Erbacher Runs 3.953/301.33, Now #3
Right Lane: Steven Chrisman No Time, Now #6

3:07 p.m. ...and we are back after a little top end cleanup. Nice pass for Erbacher. Chrisman was right behind him to just after the 330 lights and then has the car move hard over the center line and nails the mid-track cones hard and will not get a time.

Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 6.951/83.28, Now #6
Right Lane: Steve Torrence Runs 3.889/311.41, Now #1

Torrance leaves waaay early and still takes over the top spot for now. They are still running the Vis-Viva colors, but may not be making the big bucks. Millican has the best sixty-foot time of the session and then strikes the tires.

Left Lane: Troy Buff Runs 3.904/302.96, Now #2
Right Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 4.867/150.25, Now #6

Vandergriff's's car is a little lazy off the line and he is off the throttle before mid-track. Buff finds the tune-up for Pomona and slots into the new #2 position.

Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 3.855/306.46, Now #2
Right Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 3.851/308.14, Now #1

Eighty-fives a pair! Team mates take over the current top spots for now. Two nice clean runs with both cars getting the best of the class sixty foot times. Todd runs a career best ET and ties for best MPH.

Left Lane: David Grubnic Runs 5.733/111.04, Now #11
Right Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 3.892/309.56, Now #4

Strange!?!? Both Team Kalitta cars started their engines and are then told to shut them off.

3:28 p.m. Just a little clean up and we are back to qualifying. Grubnic and Kalitta are within 0.001 of each other at sixty feet, but the DHL car kicks the tires about 100 feet out. Kalitta gets the full pull into the current #4 spot.

Left Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 3.877/307.58, Now #4
Right Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 3.863/310.77, Now #3

Clay Millican is on the bump spot at 6.951. OK! A super looking side by side pass for the two red cars into the new #3 and #4. Identical sixty-foot times and 330 times within 0.002.

Left Lane: Rod Fuller Runs 3.944/302.28, Now #10
Right Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 4.529/169.64, Now #12

Arley Langlo is on the bump spot at 4.904. Dixon loses the bite first just before the 660 and then the Caterpillar Car before the lights. Both cars are in the field with four more tough cars to go in the session!

Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 5.734/110.04, Now #16
Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 7.099/88.60, Now #18

Dueling tire smoke! Both cars are done before the 330 lights. Brown first and then McClenathan.

Left Lane: Hillary Will Runs 3.860/313.07, Now #3
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 6.449/91.49, Now #18

Last pair of the session. Schumacher's car is just too agressive and doesn't make it to the 330 lights. Will had a nice 0.851 sixtyfoot time and ends up in the #3 spot for today.

3:41 p.m. J.R. is on the top of the ladder with a strong 3.851ET and tied for top speed. Urs Erbacher is on the bump spot at 3.953.
