FONTANA, Calif. --
The NHRA JEGS Pacific SPORTSnationals presented by K&N will feature a purse of nearly $65,000 plus more than $400,000 in contingency postings and competition in six NHRA Lucas Oil Series categories, including Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. NHRA Lucas Oil Series national event points will be awarded to drivers in all categories except Super Street. The division's Top Sportsman and Top Dragster classes will also run in conjunction with the race. "I think the SPORTSnationals program offers our Sportsman racers a unique and fun opportunity to compete for national points at an event that is all their own," said Eric Lotz, NHRA Director of Field Marketing and Contingency Programs. "And Jegs is the perfect company to partner with in this venture because they are all about Sportsman racing. They've done it all and they know what these racers go through to be competitive day in and day out." The focus of the event will be on competition in the core NHRA Sportsman categories but the action will include Stock and Super Stock class eliminations on Friday. Saturday's action will include the Top Sportsman/Top Dragster Shootout and Eric "Edub" Whitcomb will entertain crowds throughout the day with his one-of-a-kind motorcycle stunt show. NHRA reintroduced the SPORTSnationals in 2004 at No Problem Raceway Park in Belle Rose, La. Prior to that, NHRA had hosted the SPORTSnationals from 1974-1986 at a trio of tracks, including Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Ky., (1974-'80; 1985-'86), the old Houston International Raceway (1981-'82) and Indianapolis Raceway Park (1983-'84). The NHRA JEGS Cajun SPORTSnationals held in April at No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, La., was the first of the three events planned for the year. In September, National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio, played host to the NHRA JEGS Northern SPORTSnationals. California Dragway hosted its first NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event in September of 2005 and had nearly 500 competitors take to the quarter-mile. In 2006, the drag strip was moved from Lot 1 of Auto Club Speedway to a more permanent home on the north side of the oval and was renamed Auto Club Dragway. The Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series made its second stop at the facility in June and increased the car count by more than 100. In October of 2006 NHRA brought the popular SPORTSnationals series to the West Coast and Auto Club Dragway, with its proximity to historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, was the perfect venue for the event.
