Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2

ENNIS, Texas - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 23rd annual O'Reilly Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Ron Morrison Runs 5.985/230.02, Now #18; No Prior Run

5:10 p.m. Morrison wasn't able to make a run the first round of qualifying after developing a leak. He gets it down the track this time but doesn't have the power to get in the field.

Left Lane: Vern Moats Runs 5.709/252.99, Now #8; Best prior run: 24.073/46.65, Was #22
Right Lane: Nancy Matter Runs 12.643/64.54, Now #22; No Prior Run

Matter hits the throttle, gets about 400 feet out, then she blows the engine. Moats makes a full pass this time and gets in the show in the eighth spot.

Left Lane: Sean O'Bannon Runs 5.691/254.66, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.895/136.72, Was #21
Right Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 7.601/124.72, Now #22; Best prior run: 17.222/44.31, Was #23

Thompson gets out of the groove, makes a hard move to the right and has to abort the run. O'Bannon moved around a little early in the run but makes a decent pass and gets in the show.

Left Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 5.672/255.92, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.205/252.99, Was #21
Right Lane: Lance Van Hauen Runs 5.916/240.08, Now #20; Best prior run: 5.922/241.71, Was #19

Van Hauen drifts to the left all the way through the run. he improves slightly but not enough to get in the show. Gasparrelli goes right down the groove and moves into the third spot.

Left Lane: Bob Alberty Runs 5.736/241.84, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.883/220.12, Was #19
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.644/256.41, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.817/251.34, Was #17

Alberty makes a decent run but he starts putting out smoke about 1200 feet out so he may have lost an engine. Payne goes right down the groove and moves all the way to the third spot.

Left Lane: Steve Burck Runs 5.631/253.66, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.874/212.86, Was #19
Right Lane: Alexis De Joria Runs 5.741/250.13, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.792/249.86, Was #18

Burck makes a great pass, a career best for him, and he moves into the third spot. De Joria goes right down the groove and gets in the show on the bump spot.

Left Lane: Burl Brown Runs 5.780/248.89, Now #19; Best prior run: 5.777/248.43, Was #19
Right Lane: John Foster Runs 5.808/250.83, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.747/247.29, Was #18

A couple of clean runs but neither quick enough to get in the show.

Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.798/253.71, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.738/253.85, Was #15
Right Lane: Bobby Martin Runs 5.696/256.11, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.697/255.05, Was #11

Martin goes right down the groove and improves to the tenth spot. Gordon moved around early in the run and could not improve.

Left Lane: Jimmy Jones Runs 5.686/255.39, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.711/256.45, Was #13
Right Lane: Andy Bohl Runs 5.678/254.47, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.688/252.19, Was #7

A good side-by-side, both cars go right down the groove. Both improve, Jones to the eighth spot, Bohl up one notch to sixth.

Left Lane: Steve Harker Runs 5.586/258.02, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.689/257.09, Was #9
Right Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.628/255.39, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.629/250.51, Was #2

Harker makes an impressive pass here, right down the groove, and he takes the top spot for now. Hough makes another consistent pass but drops a notch to the third spot.

Left Lane: Von Smith Runs 5.621/255.10, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.680/255.97, Was #8
Right Lane: Nick Bastiao Runs 5.703/257.73, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.606/257.48, Was #2

Bastiao ran a career best in the first round. He slows on this pass but stays in the second spot. Smith makes a good pass and moves into the third spot.
