Pro Modified Qualifying Notes, Session #1

ENNIS, Texas - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 23rd annual O'Reilly Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Kirk Wilmes Runs 6.543/220.30, Now #1

2:40 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 87 degrees, relative humidity 40 percent, barometer 29.48 inches, adjusted altitude 3,062 feet, track temperature 112 degrees.

wilmes makes a clean, straight pass to set the early pace.


Left Lane: Gaylen Smith Runs 6.461/190.92, Now #2
Right Lane: Rick Distefano Runs 6.221/231.16, Now #1

Smith was on a decent pass, then his chutes deploy about 1200 feet out. Distefano moved around a little all the way through the run but still makes a decent pass.

Left Lane: Steve Wiley Runs 6.528/216.03, Now #3
Right Lane: Raymond Vettel Runs 11.964/75.25, Now #5

Vettel rattles the tires at the hit, gets out of the groove, then clicks it off about 200 feet out. Wiley makes a clean run to get in the third spot for now.

Left Lane: Von Smith No Time, Now #8
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.186/233.88, Now #1

Smith has problems and never fires the engine. Coughlin makes a great pass to take the early pole.

Left Lane: Mike Knowles Runs 7.764/120.88, Now #7
Right Lane: Taylor Lastor Runs 6.339/220.48, Now #3

Knowles gets out of the groove and makes a hard right toward the centerline about 250 feet out and clicks it off. Lastor makes a clean pass and gets in the third spot for now.

Left Lane: Harold Laird Runs 6.055/237.17, Now #1
Right Lane: Tim Tindle Runs 6.066/236.09, Now #2

Laird gets out of the groove early, never backs off the throttle, then gets the car under control and takes the pole. Tindle makes an impressive run to get in the second spot.

Left Lane: Scott Ray Runs 6.069/218.76, Now #3
Right Lane: Raymond Commisso Runs 6.372/181.08, Now #7

Commisso has problems late in the run and clicks it off early.

Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 7.688/125.89, Now #12
Right Lane: Kirk Kuhns Runs 6.112/234.21, Now #4

Payne gets out of the groove early and heads to the right. He gets right up against the centerline then wisely backs off the throttle. Kuhns goes right down the groove to get in the fourth spot.

Left Lane: Danny Rowe Runs 8.264/113.66, Now #15
Right Lane: Joe Baker Runs 6.010/239.82, Now #1

Baker makes an impressive pass and gets in the top spot. Rowe has problems around half-track and clicks it off.

Left Lane: Tony Pontieri Runs 6.084/237.55, Now #6
Right Lane: Joshua Hernandez Runs 5.964/242.02, Now #1

Hernandez goes right down the groove and makes a great pass for the conditions. Pontieri makes a decent pass and gets in the sixth spot.
