Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #2

CONCORD, N.C. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Inaugural NHRA Carolinas Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Mark Rogers Runs 7.088/142.54, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.059/239.31, Was #14
Right Lane: DJ Cox Jr. Runs 5.835/244.52, Now #13; Best prior run: 10.628/106.79, Was #17

Weather conditions: air temperature 85 degrees, relative humidity 68 percent, barometer 29.40 inches, adjusted altitude 3,270 feet, track temperature 109 degrees.

5:05 p.m. With the numbers we saw earlier this should be a good round of qualifying for Top Alcohol Funny Car. Both teams are looking for improvements from their earlier runs. Cox launches hard, he starts drifting towards the centerline he doesn't lift, drives the car back to the center of his lane. Rogers looked good early, but he made a big move towards the centerline and he decides to lift and save the car for another run.


Left Lane: Lou Sgro Runs 5.754/252.14, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.795/225.45, Was #10
Right Lane: Bill Naves Runs 8.643/105.86, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.301/223.43, Was #16

Sgro makes a very good run and he improves from his earlier time. Naves has tire shake and he tries to pedal it, he is able to get the car to recover, but he is not under power when he crossed the finish.

Left Lane: Paul Gill Runs 5.754/249.44, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.783/230.72, Was #10
Right Lane: Marty Nothstein Runs 5.895/249.90, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.879/250.18, Was #14

Gill makes a good move off the line and he goes quicker than earlier, but will not move up in position. Nothstein isn't able to improve from his time that he laid down earlier.

Marty Nothstein's incremental times: 60ft-1.003 sec., 330ft-2.643, 660ft-3.920/196.62mph, 1,000ft-4.995


Right Lane: Brian Harvanek Runs 5.862/247.79, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.825/230.41, Was #12

Harvanek makes a great move off the line, but the car goes sideways at half track, Harvanek is able to control the car and bring it back to him.

Brian Harvanek's incremental times: 60ft-1.008 sec., 330ft-2.616, 660ft-3.878/196.47mph, 1,000ft-4.955


Right Lane: John Bojec Runs 5.932/203.92, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.812/251.06, Was #11

Bojec also makes a move towards the centerline just past 300ft, drives through it, brings the car back to the middle of the lane, but he lifts early.

Left Lane: Mick Snyder Runs 5.614/256.50, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.707/256.41, Was #5
Right Lane: Nick Bastiao Runs 12.320/65.22, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.719/255.73, Was #6

Snyder makes a great run, he goes all the way to the #2 spot. Bastiao shakes hard and he lifts.

Mick Snyder's incremental times: 60ft-0.946 sec., 330ft-2.494, 660ft-3.706/204.66mph, 1,000ft-4.739


Left Lane: Marc White Runs 5.629/256.55, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.646/253.37, Was #4
Right Lane: Fred Tigges No Time, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.687/254.81, Was #5

White makes yet another fantastic run, he moves up one spot to 3rd on the ladder. Tigges shakes, pedals, then hits the timing cones at half track.

Marc White's incremental times: 60ft-0.959 sec., 330ft-2.502, 660ft-3.673/188.10mph, 1,000ft-4.753


Left Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.588/259.86, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.610/260.86, Was #1
Right Lane: Steve Harker Runs 5.903/257.92, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.631/257.14, Was #4

Harker started the session in the #2 spot, and now he has been bumped down to 4th. Manzo was on top when we started and he still remains there. Harker has to try to keep the car straight. Manzo is straight and fast. Manzo goes even lower than before.
