NORWALK, Ohio - Notes from final, round 2 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Second annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run: Left Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 4.640/315.86, Now #1; Best prior run: 10.212/78.73, Was #15 Right Lane: Troy Buff Runs 4.831/289.57, Now #4; No Prior Run 4:32 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 77 degrees, relative humidity 76 percent, barometer 28.82 inches, adjusted altitude 3,424 feet, track temperature 94 degrees. Buff made a run earlier today, but came up light at the scales and needed a legal; pass here to make the field. Since there are only 16 cars here, they are fighting over ladder pairings and the #1 spot. Two
full passes, Buff's car dropping at least one cylinder early in the run. No dropped cylinders for "Bud Red," Bernstein going from
almost-last to #1 (but that probably won't hold up). Left Lane: Hillary Will Runs 4.691/303.78, Now #3; Best prior run: 9.853/72.43, Was #16 Right Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.631/301.81, Now #1; Best prior run: 9.482/84.66, Was #15 The back of the Scvott Kalitta memorial T-shirts worn by the Team Kalitta crews quotes Scott, "Having the last name Kalitta didn't make me a racer, but it definitely made me want to be a winner." Two solid runs and Cory Mac takes over the top
spot even before Bernstein gets interviewed on the PA system. The top end still looks a bit loose, but the rubber buildup is
starting to tighten up that section of the race track. Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 7.369/120.20, Now #15; Best prior run: 8.598/89.58, Was #16 Right Lane: Steve Torrence Runs 4.772/282.72, Now #6; Best prior run: 7.575/109.76, Was #15 Kalitta lost traction, pedaled, smoked 'em again and shut off. Torrence did a lot better for mabout 1,100 feet, but there was a flash of flame from the engine as he approached the finish line and the Safety Safari heads for the shutdown area to clean up some oil. Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 6.111/216.86, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.513/109.95, Was #16 Right Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 4.730/280.54, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.900/172.41, Was #13 The cleanup was a quick one, just long enough to interview the K&N Horsepower Challenge winner and the fan who won a new Pontiac by being teamed with the winning driver. It is now nice and sunny, the clouds breaking and the weather front now East of here. Lucas lost traction early, pedaled, lost traction again, got sideways, flirted with the centerline, finally lifted after
getting past Doug Kalitta on the ladder. vandewrgriff hazed the tires on the top end, but moved way up the ladder for
eliminations. Right Lane: Rod Fuller Runs 4.629/311.13, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.794/156.68, Was #13 Nice run, clean and straight, no tire smoke anywhere along the way, at least none that we could see, but he did have a dead cylinder or two on the top end. Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 4.644/282.30, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.787/153.86, Was #13 Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 4.652/291.51, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.425/193.90, Was #12 Two good runs, but both left a lot on the table on the top end, hazing the tires and dropping cylinders. Left Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 9.722/87.31, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.771/297.94, Was #9 Right Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 4.647/307.30, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.888/281.36, Was #13 Todd's car started shaking the tires as it passed the Christmas tree and he lifted. Herbert made a nice run to move into the middle of top half of the field. Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 6.845/115.71, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.703/300.46, Was #8 Right Lane: David Grubnic Runs 6.843/115.72, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.841/288.09, Was #13 Last pair. Both cars dropped cylinders early, then shook the tires and started coasting.
