NORWALK, Ohio - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Second annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run: Left Lane: Tom Conway Runs 5.564/255.92, Now #1 Right Lane: Jeff Veale Runs 6.379/228.46, Now #2 1:55 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 85 degrees, relative humidity 54 percent, barometer 28.95 inches, adjusted altitude 3,642 feet, track temperature 118 degrees. This is Conway's first national event in a long time - the last was so long
ago that it doesn't even show up in our career stats. He was last in the top-50 in 1995, Jay Payne won the TAD crown that year.
Conway marked his return by making a very nice run to stake his claim to the #1 spot. Veale shook early and never did get fully
recovered. Left Lane: Randy Meyer Runs 6.207/238.17, Now #2 Right Lane: Jared Dreher Runs 6.369/231.52, Now #3 Meyer sat at the line long after the green, then shook when he launched. Dreher shook even harder - oh-for-two. Left Lane: Paul Fishburn Runs 5.665/245.81, Now #3 Right Lane: Dave Weber Runs 5.599/248.16, Now #2 Two nice runs here, but Conway hangs on to the top spot. Left Lane: Tim Bowgren Runs 5.898/226.73, Now #5 Right Lane: Dave Hirata Runs 5.611/255.68, Now #3 Two more full passes, Bowgren unable to keep pace with Hirata. Left Lane: Mike Kosky No Time, Now #10 Right Lane: Noah Condo Runs 5.465/260.97, Now #1 Kosky had a l,ot of problems at Englishtown, lost the engine here on the burnout, leaving a trail of oil from the tree to where he stoppped at the end of the burnout, then back to where he parked over by the wall about 150 feet out so Condo could run. Condo made a solo pass and went right to the top of the list. Then the cleanup started - a big one. 2:05 p.m. Left Lane: Jeff Bohr Runs 5.427/261.72, Now #1 Right Lane: Robin Samsel Runs 24.215/27.71, Now #11 2:28 p.m. The Safety Safari worked hard and long to clean that one up and Bohr gave it a good test with this pass - straight, smooth and hard. Samsel may have gotten some fluids under his tires, up in smoke immediately. Left Lane: Marty Thacker Runs 5.449/263.26, Now #2 Right Lane: Bill Evans Runs 5.733/255.34, Now #8 Thacker slid in right behind Bohr on another strong, straight pass. Evans made a good recovery from early tire shake. Left Lane: Brandon Lewis Runs 8.704/131.63, Now #14 Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.560/263.46, Now #4 Lewis' car sputtered and staggered down the track. Reichert made a clean run, but did not come up with his usual knockout punch this time around - and that completes this round of qualifying with exactly 16 cars making attempts and 15 of them getting times.
