ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 39th annual Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run: Left Lane: Todd Paton Runs 4.984/242.80, Now #14; No Prior Run Right Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 9.734/85.29, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.412/203.71, Was #15 3:46 p.m. - Weather conditions: air temperature 90 degrees, relative humidity 28 percent, barometer 29.93 inches, adjusted altitude 2,558 feet, track temperature 132 degrees. There are 16 Top Fuel dragsters here this weekend and all but Paton have already made the field. He did not make an attempt in the first two sessions and had to shut down before he could stage his car in the third session earlier today. Todd would like to move up in the order but with the heat and high track temperature today, that will be a difficult task. Paton took his car down the track and at 1,000 feet, there was a burst of flame from his engine. As he crossed the finish line, the right rear tire went flat and the titanium skid pad on the bottom of the chassis started to drag on the track, leaving a trail of sparks.
Todd shook the tires when he launched and clicked it off early. Left Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 4.773/304.25, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.382/252.47, Was #15 Right Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 8.213/95.33, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.609/319.14, Was #12 There was a 10-minute delay to clean up after Paton. Kalitta shook the rear tires at 330 feet and clicked it off. Herbert took his car down the groove for his quickest pass of the weekend. He moved up one spot in the order. Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 4.688/313.58, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.684/310.05, Was #13 Right Lane: Hillary Will Runs 9.298/78.52, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.584/323.12, Was #10 Will got out to the 330 foot marker and like those before here, she shook the tires and clicked it off. Dixon went straight down the middle of his lane. Neither driver changed his or her place in the qualifying order. Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 6.192/135.25, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.601/320.74, Was #11 Lucas shook the tires at mid track and shut his car down. Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 8.226/83.81, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.582/320.36, Was #9 Right Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.737/307.79, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.542/325.92, Was #5 Schumacher launched with a bit of tire shake. He drove through it and shook the rear tires harder at 330 feet before he clicked it off. McClenathan's pass was cleaner but did not change his spot in the order. Left Lane: Bob Vandergriff No Time, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.565/315.19, Was #7 Right Lane: David Grubnic Runs 6.074/134.86, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.539/318.84, Was #4 Vandergriff did his burnout and as he started to stage, the right front tire on his car went flat. So he shut it down and was pushed away. Grubnic got to mid track when he shook the tires and clicked it off. Left Lane: Rod Fuller Runs 4.609/322.58, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.551/328.46, Was #6 Fuller had a nice run down the groove. He had the low ET and top speed of the session so far. But it was not enough to improve his spot in the qualifying order. He'll stay in the number six spot. Left Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 4.782/299.66, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.525/323.27, Was #2 Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 4.656/316.38, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.502/326.24, Was #1 Both drivers had nice runs, given the conditions, but Bernstein was not able to get by Brown in the order. Brown's chutes did not come out at the end of the track but he was able to get his car stopped and off the track without incident. Top Fuel qualifying is complete, with Antron Brown at the top of the qualifying order and J.R. Todd in the number 16 starting position.
