ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 39th annual Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run: Left Lane: Nicholas Montana Runs 6.447/216.06, Now #1 Right Lane: David Hance Runs 7.462/170.47, Now #2 6:35 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 83 degrees, relative humidity 35 percent, barometer 29.88 inches, adjusted altitude 2,168 feet, track temperature 108 degrees. First time out for these two, Montana in an early-model Camaro and Hance a '57 Bel Air. Montana made a full pass. Hance shook and danced about 100 feet out, possibly losing traction in his own oil. Wwe're down
for a long cleanup as the scrubbers go to work from the starting line past half track and the trucks start cleaning up near the end
of the shutdown area. Left Lane: Vinny Budano Runs 6.293/222.11, Now #1 Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 12.492/83.63, Now #4 6:52 p.m. Let's try this again...Castellana is one of the quickest and is the fastest nitrous car in IHRA competition, but he'll need another shot to show his stuff after hard tire shake on the launch hyere. Budano went right down the groove on a clean run. Left Lane: Tommy Gray Runs 6.409/220.80, Now #3 Right Lane: Brad Personett Runs 6.409/227.92, Now #2 Contrasting sounds here, the strident bark of Gray's blown car against the gentle murmur of Personett's turbocharged entry. They posted identical elapsed times, Personett getting the edge by virtue of higher speed. Left Lane: Shelly Payne Runs 6.106/225.22, Now #1 Right Lane: Tim Tindle Runs 7.488/223.76, Now #7 Nice run by Payne to take over the top spot. Tindle shook and lost a second or so early in the run. Left Lane: Taylor Lastor Runs 6.057/232.79, Now #2 Right Lane: Roger Burgess Runs 6.045/240.94, Now #1 Lastor's car was smoking through the middle of the run, but whatever it was didn't slow him down much. Meanwhile, Burgess claimed the top spot with lowq ET and top speed so far. Left Lane: Scott Ray No Time, Now #12 Right Lane: John Russo Runs 5.993/242.80, Now #1 Ray took a wild ride here, the car making a sharp turn to the right, then made a full pirouette as it crossed the centerline. Amazingly, the tires didn't hook and the car stayed upright, stopping in the middle of the right lane without hitting anything. Meanwhile, with nobody watching, Russo made the first five-second run of the weekend to take over the top spot, running top speed to go with it. Left Lane: Steve Engel Runs 8.456/108.70, Now #12 Right Lane: Raymond Commisso Runs 5.989/239.36, Now #1 Engel's car also made a hard move to the right, but he saved it without crossing the line. meanwhile, Commisso took the top spot away from Russo the second five of the weekend. Left Lane: Kirk Kuhns Runs 6.018/236.59, Now #3 Right Lane: Joshua Hernandez Runs 7.233/130.35, Now #11 It's not the lane - Kuhns went straight down the groove in the left lane while Hernandez slowed early with tire shake in the right. Left Lane: Danny Rowe Runs 6.076/219.22, Now #6 Right Lane: Jay Payne No Time, Now #15 Payne shook, pedaled, skated around, then crossed the centerline, collecting the 1,000-foot timing block.popped the burst panel on the top end of the run. Meanwhile, Rowe appeared to lose a few pistons beyond 1,000 feet, popping the burst panel and slowing. Left Lane: Joe Baker Runs 6.094/233.80, Now #7 Right Lane: Tony Pontieri Runs 6.099/239.31, Now #8 Finally a pair of cars with nothing obviously wrong between A and B.
