Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #1

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 39th annual Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Right Lane: Val Smeland Runs 7.574/140.23, Now #1

4:11 p.m. - Weather conditions: air temperature 82 degrees, relative humidity 37 percent, barometer 29.90 inches, adjusted altitude 2,108 feet, track temperature 114 degrees.

Smeland's car danced a bit on the track but he managed to keep it fairly straight.

Left Lane: Lee Zane Runs 6.989/196.27, Now #2
Right Lane: Jim Cunningham Runs 6.828/201.49, Now #1

This is Zane's first race in a Pro Stock car. He was racing in the Stock Eliminator class but was eliminated earlier today. Zane had a nice-looking pass down the quarter mile. Cunningham also had an uneventful trip down the track.

Left Lane: Vinnie Deceglie Runs 13.443/63.03, Now #5
Right Lane: Dave Northrop Runs 6.718/205.66, Now #1

Deceglie launched and shook the tires. He clicked it off and coasted the rest of the way. Northrup took his car straight down the groove.

Right Lane: John Nobile Runs 6.764/206.04, Now #2

Nobile's car moved hard to the right when he launched. He got it straightened out and completed a pretty good run.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.737/204.88, Now #3
Right Lane: Max Naylor Runs 6.676/207.34, Now #1

Naylor had a strong run to move to the top of the order. Morgan's pass also looked bood but was just not as quick as Naylor.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 7.070/158.76, Now #8
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.682/206.20, Now #2

Gray's car pulled out of the groove and drifted to the right at about 1,000 feet. He got the car straightened out but it cost him on his elapsed time. Yates moved to the number two spot in the order with a clean pass down the drag strip.

Left Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 7.828/127.92, Now #11
Right Lane: Justin Humphreys Runs 7.647/134.15, Now #10

Connolly drifted out of the groove. So did Humphreys. Both of them backed off the throttle just past mid track.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.672/207.75, Now #2
Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 6.664/206.54, Now #1

Johnson's transporter broke a crankshaft broke a crankshaft in Maryland on the way here. He and his team has to rent a replacement tractor to finish the trip. He and Stanfield each had clean runs to move into the top two spots in the order.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.633/207.43, Now #1
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.666/206.23, Now #3

Krisher moved to the top of the order with his career-best ET. Gaines was not far behind him and took the third spot in the order for now.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.659/207.02, Now #3
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.656/207.30, Now #2

Johnson had the quickest 60-foot time of the session so far and finished it off with another good 1,260 feet to move into the third spot for now. Edwards took possession of the number two spot with his run.

Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.622/208.52, Now #1
Right Lane: Jason Line Runs 6.672/208.39, Now #7

Anderson moved to the top of the order for now with a strong run down the quarter mile. Line had a nice-looking pass that put him into the top half of the order for now.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.654/206.83, Now #4
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.646/209.10, Now #3

A pair of clean trips down the track that put Johnson and Coughlin in the three and four spots in the order. That's it for the first Pro Stock qualifying session. Greg Anderson is at the top of the field and Jim Cunningham is on the bump spot with a time of 6.828 seconds.
