BRISTOL, Tenn. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Eighth annual O'Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals presented by Q listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run: Right Lane: Bob Gilbertson No Time, Now #1 4:28 p.m. Gilbertson drifted out of the groove and started moving to the left. He doesn't back off the throttle, drifts across the centerline just past the half track cone, then pulls it back to the right and just misses the 1000 foot cone. Left Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 4.845/304.12, Now #2 Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.839/318.62, Now #1 A couple of decent runs but they both started mixing up cylinders about 1000 feet out. Left Lane: Scott Kalitta Runs 4.956/308.00, Now #3 Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 5.068/256.70, Now #4 Johnson was on a decent pass but the car nosed over about 1100 feet out. Kalitta kept the candles lit all the way through the run. Left Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 4.848/308.57, Now #3 Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 4.896/285.47, Now #4 Bartone was a little squirrely off the line but got the car under control for a decent pass. No problems for Toliver and he moves into the third spot. Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.815/316.08, Now #1 Right Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 5.604/192.96, Now #9 Scelzi rattled the tires off the line, pedaled once, then went on through with a decent run. head goes right down the groove and takes the pole for now. Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 9.508/92.72, Now #11 Right Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.809/311.41, Now #1 Neff drifted to the left off the line, then steered it back to the groove and takes the top spot for now. Tasca rattled the tires early and gave up on the run about 300 feet out. Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 6.533/212.03, Now #12 Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 5.082/285.53, Now #9 Capps has a new chassis to conform to the new specs that are mandantory by the Denver race. He made one pass during testing in St. Louis.
Capps rattles the tires off the line, pedals about 200 feet out, then goes on through the
run. Worsham gets out of the groove and backs off the throttle about 400 feet
out. Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 5.685/219.26, Now #13 Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 5.263/209.04, Now #10 Beckman rattles the tires early and pedals once. He gets about 1000 feet out, then bangs the blower. Densham was on a decent pass, then the car nosed over about 900 feet out, not sure why. Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.821/316.90, Now #3 Right Lane: John Force Runs 10.628/87.09, Now #17 Force shakes the tires early and gives up on the run. Pedregon makes a clean pass and gets in the third spot for now. Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 5.918/165.13, Now #16 Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.879/300.06, Now #7 Hight had problems after half track and clicked it off. Pedregon clicks it off a little early. Left Lane: Ashley Force Runs 4.912/295.46, Now #10 Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.886/305.29, Now #8 Wilkerson was on a pretty good run then the engine let go just before he went through the lights. Force was just a little behind all the way through the run and had engine problems late.
