Pro Modified Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Dan Bennett

MADISON, Ill. - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Pro Modified at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 12th annual O'Reilly NHRA Midwest Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Rick Stivers Runs 6.578/226.13, Now #14; No Prior Run

Stivers carries the wheels out a long way and heads out of the groove when they land. He pedals once and then heads to the finish line.

Right Lane: Mike Knowles Runs 6.345/222.29, Now #9; Best prior run: 16.184/59.29, Was #23

Knowles leaves soft and it pays off as he jumps into th 9th position. When the clutch came in at half track the car moved toward the center line but smoothly brought the car back to the center.

Left Lane: Steve Engel Runs 11.976/67.95, Now #20; Best prior run: 9.440/103.63, Was #20
Right Lane: Danny Rowe Runs 5.987/241.02, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.987/241.02, Was #2

Engel does the pogo until 400, when he lifts.

Rowe's wallbanging last night didn't seem to faze him much as he almost takes over the top spot.

Left Lane: Shelly Payne Runs 13.032/55.93, Now #20; Best prior run: 8.411/154.51, Was #19
Right Lane: Raymond Vettel Runs 6.677/213.77, Now #17; Best prior run: 11.447/81.21, Was #23

Neither car mastered the starting line as both had trouble with shake, spin, and movement.

Vettel gets back on the throttle and crosses the finish line in a cloud of white smoke.

Left Lane: John Russo Runs 6.802/153.39, Now #19; Best prior run: 8.301/113.56, Was #19
Right Lane: Taylor Lastor Runs 6.064/227.54, Now #5; Best prior run: 9.999/88.79, Was #23

Lastor makes the show but Russo doesn't.

Left Lane: Tommy Gray Runs 28.156/262.86, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.571/0.00, Was #16
Right Lane: Raymond Commisso Runs 10.739/87.41, Now #23; Best prior run: 9.658/94.15, Was #23

Commisso double pumps the clutch, which the car doesn't like at all. It spins hard at the hit and then the clutch can't handle the rpm as they rise.

Gray gets an ET but with the strong wind blowing, we had something blow through and interfere with the speed lights.

The Safety Safari trucks roll for some work in the right lane shutdown area.

Left Lane: Dan Saitz Runs 6.364/224.21, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.489/212.66, Was #15
Right Lane: Tim Tindle Runs 6.211/229.27, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.856/153.09, Was #20

Left Lane: Joe Baker Runs 10.910/87.82, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.204/229.55, Was #10
Right Lane: Harold Laird Runs 5.958/238.30, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.404/225.45, Was #15

Laird gets everybody's attention with a very nice run.

Baker was hammering the tires early.

Left Lane: Eddie Ware Runs 6.097/236.30, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.114/234.98, Was #9
Right Lane: Scott Ray Runs 6.676/144.80, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.384/180.02, Was #15

The cars left together but the Ray Corvette slowed on the top end. The trucks don't roll, so it wasn't an engine letting go.

Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 11.857/69.46, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.107/236.80, Was #9
Right Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 12.213/103.92, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.146/235.10, Was #10

But cars went for the centerline, both thankfully they had different reaction times so they didn't get too close to each other.

Left Lane: Kirk Kuhns Runs 6.095/234.37, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.050/234.78, Was #5
Right Lane: Roger Burgess Runs 9.033/100.23, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.101/236.92, Was #8

Burgess' car stands up and heads for the sidelines.

Left Lane: Joshua Hernandez Runs 5.955/241.89, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.046/235.19, Was #4
Right Lane: Tony Pontieri Runs 11.037/95.35, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.969/239.53, Was #2

Another car has problems getting off the line in the right lane.

Hernandez does another one of his last-ditch qualifying efforts and once again swipes the top spot.
