Pro Stock Motorcycle Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Darryl Jackman

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock Motorcycle at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 43nd annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Matt Smith Runs 6.968/189.76, Now #1; Best prior run: 9.141/78.84, Was #20

1:46 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 45 percent, barometer 28.95 inches, adjusted altitude 2,370 feet, track temperature 98 degrees.

The Pros make their only appearance here on Friday, with two more hits scheduled for Saturday. Smith opens it up in style as he goes from outside to the top of the world. Angelle falls to #2.

Left Lane: Ryan Schnitz Runs 7.375/178.76, Now #20; Best prior run: 7.423/176.65, Was #20

Schnitz is sitting up early.

Left Lane: Michael Phillips Runs 7.145/185.61, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.202/185.15, Was #19
Right Lane: Michael Ray Runs 7.222/180.79, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.170/181.23, Was #18

Phillips puts Junior Pippen on the bump. No help for Ray.

Left Lane: Shawn Gann Runs 7.101/187.68, Now #13; Best prior run: 7.158/185.13, Was #18
Right Lane: Geno Scali Runs 7.096/189.39, Now #12; Best prior run: 7.156/185.28, Was #17

That puts Phillips and Pippen out of the show. Nice runs for both Gann and Scali.

Left Lane: Junior Pippin Runs 7.102/183.92, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.153/183.87, Was #18
Right Lane: Mike Berry Runs 7.248/184.40, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.129/185.51, Was #16

Pippen actually picks up a nickel and bumps himself back into the field.

Left Lane: Steve Johnson Runs 7.049/188.89, Now #8; Best prior run: 7.118/176.21, Was #16
Right Lane: Karen Stoffer Runs 7.015/190.24, Now #6; Best prior run: 7.103/185.36, Was #15

Stoffer is in the top half of the field and also has top speed. Not bad. Johnson moves into the top half and puts Pippen on the bump.

Left Lane: Antron Brown Runs 7.035/187.68, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.088/184.40, Was #12
Right Lane: Matt Guidera Runs 7.070/187.36, Now #13; Best prior run: 7.090/184.62, Was #13

We're down to the last rides for the Army team and it appears Antron is trying to make it memorable. Guidera goes quicker but doesn't improve.

Left Lane: Craig Treble Runs 7.033/191.43, Now #8; Best prior run: 7.070/188.54, Was #12
Right Lane: Peggy Llewellyn Runs 7.003/188.10, Now #5; Best prior run: 7.061/186.20, Was #11

Treble with the booming speed! Llewellyn is not into the top half of the show.

Left Lane: Hector Arana Runs 7.035/190.30, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.052/187.91, Was #12
Right Lane: Chris Rivas Runs 7.037/188.65, Now #11; Best prior run: 7.035/185.18, Was #10

Arana and Rivas with just about identical runs here. Rivas just about duplicates his first hit.

Left Lane: Andrew Hines Runs 7.020/190.75, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.996/189.71, Was #4
Right Lane: Chip Ellis Runs 6.965/191.46, Now #1; Best prior run: 7.010/188.46, Was #6

Ellis moves his S&S Buell all the way to the top of the show. That comes with top speed for the class as well. Hines trailed on the run but remains in the top half.

Left Lane: Eddie Krawiec Runs 6.996/189.26, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.995/189.58, Was #4
Right Lane: Angelle Sampey Runs 7.006/190.40, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.973/188.94, Was #3

Ellis says he's a little surprised that he stayed #1. He felt there were three other riders that would cut him before qualifying ended. Well, that was the final pair of riders so it means he got that prediction wrong.
