Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Bob Orme

LAS VEGAS - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Seventh annual ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: James Day No Time, Now #24; Best prior run: 5.272/273.77, Was #24

4:47 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 85 degrees, relative humidity 14 percent, barometer 29.93 inches, adjusted altitude 1,820 feet, track temperature 97 degrees.

Day hit the throttle and he blew up something in the engine before the car traveled sixty feet. The car rolled to a stop about 150 feet down the track.

Right Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 8.239/130.45, Now #22; Best prior run: 4.935/301.47, Was #22

Gilbertson smoked the tires just past the tree bringing an end to his weekend.

Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 8.750/104.59, Now #23; Best prior run: 4.952/308.14, Was #23
Right Lane: Jon Capps Runs 10.921/68.47, Now #21; Best prior run: 4.898/298.54, Was #21

Both drivers struck the tires at about 150 feet, and both drivers are going to be spectators on Sunday.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson No Time, Now #20; Best prior run: 4.896/292.14, Was #20
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.835/323.43, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.889/319.67, Was #18

Tommy Johnson Jr. is on the bump spot at 4.866. Wilkerson crept off the line at the hit, rolled to a stop at about 250 feet, and by looking at the fluids he left on the racing surface, he had a fuel delivery system failure. Head makes his best pass of the weekend to bump his way into the field for now.

Left Lane: Kenny Bernstein Runs 4.844/313.88, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.896/318.92, Was #19
Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 4.864/302.89, Now #18; Best prior run: 4.866/313.88, Was #17

Both cars went straight down the groove with the candles lit all the way. Bernstein's time was good enough to make the show for now and Johnson's wasn't.

Kenny Bernstein's incremental times: 60ft-0.920 sec., 330ft-2.344, 660ft-3.325/260.66mph, 1,000ft-4.139

Jerry Toliver's incremental times: 60ft-0.911 sec., 330ft-2.338, 660ft-3.321/259.51mph, 1,000ft-4.134

Right Lane: Scott Kalitta Runs 4.788/323.50, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.835/317.57, Was #16

Kalitta is on the bump, but there's no one left in the lanes who could bump him out. A great looking side-by-side drag race! Both drivers move way up the ladder.

Gary Densham's incremental times: 60ft-0.900 sec., 330ft-2.296, 660ft-3.275/261.07mph, 1,000ft-4.082
Scott Kalitta's incremental times: 60ft-0.916 sec., 330ft-2.323, 660ft-3.299/262.95mph, 1,000ft-4.100

Another pair take it straight down Broadway. Ashley moves to the top half of the ladder for now.

Mike Ashley's incremental times: 60ft-0.921 sec., 330ft-2.350, 660ft-3.326/263.36mph, 1,000ft-4.119

Worsham struck the tires just before the 330-foot mark. A very good looking pass for Neff.

Mike Neff's incremental times: 60ft-0.910 sec., 330ft-2.335, 660ft-3.316/260.81mph, 1,000ft-4.119

Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.818/313.07, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.782/321.81, Was #4

Other than Beckman mixing up the cylinders right at the finish, there were no problems for either driver.

Jeff Arend's incremental times: 60ft-0.901 sec., 330ft-2.321, 660ft-3.297/260.86mph, 1,000ft-4.107

Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 6.939/122.09, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.770/314.09, Was #2

Pedregon was up in smoke right at the 330-foot mark. A very strong pass for Scelzi moves him into the number three spot on the ladder. Capps could change that in the next (final) pair.

Gary Scelzi's incremental times: 60ft-0.910 sec., 330ft-2.314, 660ft-3.278/264.80mph, 1,000ft-4.082

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.783/322.96, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.796/323.58, Was #9
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 10.660/74.75, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.763/322.58, Was #1

Hight had traction troubles and he was off the throttle at about 200 feet. A very good looking run for Capps and he'll face Burkart in the first round tomorrow.

Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.908 sec., 330ft-2.321, 660ft-3.290/263.46mph, 1,000ft-4.093
