ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Torco Pro Modified at the 2007 Knoll-Gas Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series, IHRA World Finals Presented by The U.S. Air Force featuring UTI CHampionship Sunday listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run: Left Lane: Danny Rowe Runs 14.405/56.02, Now #24; Best prior run: 13.514/80.72, Was #24 Right Lane: Steve Vick Runs 6.377/220.40, Now #15; Best prior run: 11.472/98.27, Was #21 2:48 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 83 degrees, relative humidity 47 percent, barometer 29.55 inches, adjusted altitude 2,279 feet, track temperature 108 degrees. The track is warm enough to be challenging, as several drivers found out during the just-completed Pro Stock session. Rowe lost traction, the RPMs going way up as he left the starting line. Vick shook
slightly and used up a lot of the first part of the track, but he got in the field - for now, anyway. Mark Nielsen is on the bump
spot at 6.414. Right Lane: Steve Carrier Runs 6.439/215.72, Now #17; Best prior run: 14.331/57.54, Was #25 Carrier's engine was popping and banging, then the chute came off when he put it out. But he got it slowed and made the turn okay. Left Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 6.077/231.16, Now #1; Best prior run: 12.800/69.23, Was #24 Right Lane: Steve Engel No Time, Now #23; Best prior run: 10.860/105.18, Was #22 Engel's left before the tree was activated, then the car bucked and rared up a couple times before he shut it off. Jenkins spun the tires on the launch, then made the quickest 1/8-mile and 1/4-mile pass by a nitrous car in IHRA competition. Shannon Jenkins' incremental times: 60ft-1.026 sec., 330ft-2.674, 660ft-3.989/188.46mph, 1,000ft-5.114. The speed is also outstanding, but Jenkins went almost 235 mph earlier this year. Left Lane: Pat Stoken Runs 6.122/229.78, Now #4; Best prior run: 11.490/76.78, Was #24 Right Lane: Tony Pontieri Runs 6.152/228.73, Now #6; Best prior run: 9.799/96.25, Was #22 Nice runs, both lanes. Left Lane: Jeff Lamantia Runs 11.547/89.83, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.726/222.99, Was #23 LaMantia's Camaro chattered the tires and made a hard right turn before he could get it shut off. Left Lane: Scott Cannon Runs 6.076/227.00, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.443/215.55, Was #21 Right Lane: John Russo Runs 13.337/71.56, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.475/227.57, Was #22 Cannon is oh-so-close to clinching the 2007 championship, but he needs to make it into the field and go one round to slam the door on all challengers. This run should get him safely into the field, but he sacrificed a bullet to get there, the car
trailing smoke from 1,000 feet on. He was running 188 mph at half track after some early tire spin. Russo shook hard early in the
run and had to lift. Left Lane: Mark Nielsen Runs 7.235/232.11, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.414/227.80, Was #20 Right Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.233/228.23, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.250/224.40, Was #15 Updated weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 49 percent, barometer 29.52 inches, adjusted altitude 2,145 feet, track temperature 112 degrees. Nielsen rolled the beams, with a 2.109 60-foot time. Nice run by Hoover to
move up a couple spots. Left Lane: Mike Stawicki Runs 6.094/228.73, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.317/220.30, Was #18 Right Lane: Tommy Gray Runs 20.777/36.41, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.248/228.50, Was #15 Barney Squiers was on the bump spot at 6.277 when these two staged. Gray shook and could only watch as Stawicki made a nice run to put Gray on the bump spot and Squiers on the outside. Left Lane: Chris Russo Runs 6.227/229.39, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.291/227.08, Was #18 Right Lane: Harold Martin No Time, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.244/205.41, Was #15 Martin hurt his engine last night and did not answer the call for this session. Russo made a loose start, using up a lot of the lane early, but he moved back into the field, bumping Gray and moving Martin onto the bump spot. Left Lane: Barney Squiers Runs 21.216/35.72, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.277/223.06, Was #18 Squiers was bumped a couple pairs ago, had too much clutch in it, and lost traction violently, so he's down to one last chance tonight. Left Lane: Jason Hamstra Runs 6.162/229.20, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.213/225.41, Was #13 Right Lane: Burton Auxier Runs 6.177/224.43, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.207/221.71, Was #12 No more bumping, but the field should continue to shuffle with the final pairs, and tonight should be interesting once the track surface cools off a bit. Auxier got one of the few straight, clean launches we've seen this session, a stout 0.997
60-foot time his reward. He improved three hundredths, stayed 12th because Hamstra leapfrogged over him with a bigger
improvement. Left Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.094/233.96, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.169/232.63, Was #11 Right Lane: Kenny Lang Runs 6.100/234.49, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.188/229.59, Was #13 Quain Stott had Ray McCorkle's ashes in his parachute pack on this pass and gave McCorkle a nice last pass, right down the groove. Lang also made a nice run, just a few thousandths behind Stott. Left Lane: Jim Halsey Runs 6.153/230.45, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.121/228.42, Was #7 Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 6.095/233.80, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.166/229.63, Was #12 Both cars were a bit loose on the launch, Halsey lost a little from his first run, Hagan picked up a few hundredths. Left Lane: Chip King Runs 8.734/106.37, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.081/230.06, Was #3 Right Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.028/237.13, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.127/235.64, Was #10 King boiled the hides, but Janis showed that he is not about to lay down and give Scott Cannon the championship, taking the top spot away from Cannon with a very stout run. Mike Janis' incremental times: 60ft-1.014 sec., 330ft-2.664, 660ft-3.969/189.20mph, 1,000ft-5.086
