Funny Car Time Trial Notes, Session #2
By Darryl Jackman

LAS VEGAS - Notes from round 2 time trials in Funny Car at the NHRA, Las Vegas Test listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.939/249.72, Now #4; No Prior Run

Pedregon lifted a little early as he was wandering the lane a little bit.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.944/250.97, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.874/317.12, Was #3

Beckman was headed for the centerline all the way down and lifted petty early. Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.928 sec., 330ft-2.352, 660ft-3.318/262.85mph, 1,000ft-4.129.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.324/195.59, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.939/249.72, Was #4

Pedregon lifted early on this one. No reason that I could see.

Left Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 5.324/195.59, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.837/321.96, Was #2

Scelzi followed Beckman and had almost the same run as Beckman. The difference here was that Scelzi put a bunch of 'stuff' all over the left lane. Turned out to be about a 10 bagger! Oops.

Left Lane: Phil Burkart Jr Runs 5.069/226.09, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.036/154.76, Was #5

Best for Burkart in John's car to date.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.801/298.67, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.824/316.97, Was #1

Capps takes the Brut car to the top of the testing heap.

Left Lane: Ashley Force Runs 5.214/207.78, Now #7; No Prior Run

11:42 a.m. This is the first pass for Ashley Force since dad's accident in Dallas if I'm not mistaken. Right down the middle of the lane and falling silent just before the lights.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.048/229.90, Now #5; No Prior Run

An early shutoff for Pedregon.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 9.408/84.10, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.824/316.97, Was #1

Capps and team get a little over center and they strike the tires at about 330ft. Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.928 sec., 330ft-2.560, 660ft-4.532/106.83mph, 1,000ft-6.939.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.839/322.34, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.874/317.12, Was #3

Beckman makes his quickest and fastest pass of the weekend.

Left Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.921/259.71, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.365/198.96, Was #4

Neff is getting closer to his ticket, but still needs to pick up the speed. He shutoff at about 1100ft.

Left Lane: Ashley Force Runs 6.118/154.56, Now #7; No Prior Run

2:34 p.m. A. Force was right in the middle of the lane but shutoff just about half track. Planned? Ashley Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.912 sec., 330ft-2.336, 660ft-3.458/193.27mph, 1,000ft-4.756.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.911/256.94, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.939/249.72, Was #5

T. Pedregon is back for his second hit of the day. Another early shut off nets a four second pass but no real mph. Tony Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.909 sec., 330ft-2.324, 660ft-3.301/261.93mph, 1,000ft-4.110.

Left Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.900/279.61, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.837/321.96, Was #2

That run looked better while I was watching than the numbers that came up on the board. From behind the starting line here at The Strip it's sometimes hard to see exactly where a driver shuts off. Gary Scelzi's incremental times: 60ft-0.921 sec., 330ft-2.373, 660ft-3.354/261.42mph, 1,000ft-4.161.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.878/283.67, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.839/322.34, Was #3

2:52 p.m. Beckman was up about an hour ago and made a really nice lap. They appear to be practicing a turn around as they are back very quickly after the last lap.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.861/320.13, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.824/316.97, Was #1

Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.942 sec., 330ft-2.385, 660ft-3.359/261.62mph, 1,000ft-4.166.

Left Lane: Phil Burkart Jr Runs 10.080/90.76, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.036/154.76, Was #5

Burkart knocks the tires loose before 330 and has to give it up.

Left Lane: Mike Neff Runs 4.849/316.23, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.365/198.96, Was #4

That's a major hurdle out of the way for Neff and his pilots license. Mike Neff's incremental times: 60ft-0.913 sec., 330ft-2.350, 660ft-3.342/257.73mph, 1,000ft-4.154.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.760/322.81, Now #1; No Prior Run

5:07 p.m. Tony Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.911 sec., 330ft-2.319, 660ft-3.281/266.37mph, 1,000ft-4.075. Tony goes quick.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.865/312.78, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.824/316.97, Was #1

5:13 p.m. The track is now in complete shade from the grandstands. Capps gets a full pull and just may have put some 'stuff' down.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.753/325.30, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.874/317.12, Was #3

Beckman is now the quick critter of the day. Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.904 sec., 330ft-2.316, 660ft-3.273/266.21mph, 1,000ft-4.066.

Left Lane: Phil Burkart Jr Runs 4.878/256.75, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.036/154.76, Was #5

5:48 p.m. Well, we're supposed to be done at 5:50 so this really could be the final run of the day. Burkart was straight down the middle of the lane in J. Force's racer and then the fire went out and the chutes were early. Phil Burkart Jr's incremental times: 60ft-0.911 sec., 330ft-2.312, 660ft-3.269/266.90mph, 1,000ft-4.072.
