Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Dan Bennett

DINWIDDIE, Va. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, Second annual Torco Racing Fuels NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Terry Mcmillen Runs 6.775/123.05, Now #1
Right Lane: Bobby Lagana Jr. Runs 9.702/76.77, Now #2

8:22 p.m. We've made it into the last Pro classes without any serious delays.

McMillen pedals two or three times within the first 500 feet, while Lagana only tries once. Both cars coast across the line.

Wow. That was different. Just a couple of minutes after the cars cleared the top end, we lost all power here at the track and everything plunged into darkness. The power came back on but the lights are still warming up and it's really quiet out there. 8:30 p.m. 8:44 p.m. and the next pair fires.

Left Lane: Doug Foley Runs 4.697/264.49, Now #1
Right Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 9.019/102.22, Now #3

Lucas' flames went out very early, way before half track. Foley made it almost to the finish line, but evidently he was moving around quite a bit and pulled the plug early.

Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 7.587/97.13, Now #4
Right Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.629/318.24, Now #1

Kalitta is strong all the way through and goes to the top position. Millican lost traction just past 330, slapped the throttle once, and then gave up when the car didn't recover.

Left Lane: Hillary Will No Time, Now #8
Right Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.802/321.96, Now #3

Hillary leaves long before the tree activated and doesn't get a light or ET. She had turned out the top light so she may have rolled the beams and just gone with the run for the computer data. McClenathan left after the green but was on and off the throttle early in the run. We're now hearing that Will's brakes wouldn't hold her car on the line.

Left Lane: David Grubnic Runs 10.173/87.27, Now #8
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 10.721/80.02, Now #9

Pretty much synchronized this time around. Both cars left together and both were off the throttle at the same time. They'll need to put a good number down tomorrow.

Left Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 4.592/317.64, Now #1
Right Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 4.606/316.01, Now #2

Just about the time I was going to make a comment about this not being a particularly memorable session, we get a side by side with some great performance.

J.R. gets there first but drives the long way around to get there.

Left Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 4.574/321.42, Now #1
Right Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 17.507/30.81, Now #13

Bazemore goes to the top on a very nice looking run. Vandergriff got everyone's attention with a big - but short lived - fireball just at half track.

We're down for a cleanup in the right lane. I'm not sure if this one is going to be chargeable, but from my records Vandergriff has one freebie in the bank. We hear they're picking up parts but there is no oil.

Left Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 4.549/321.58, Now #1
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 9.639/79.31, Now #11

Bernstein lays down the quickest pass yet, and that's very bad news for Vandergriff and the UPS team.

Schumacher left hard and was ahead at 100 feet but soon lost traction, pedalled, and gave up.

Left Lane: Rod Fuller Runs 4.858/317.05, Now #9
Right Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 4.600/313.80, Now #4

Dixon goes straight down the track while Fuller loses traction.

That pass by Bernstein going into the top spot is looming large right now.

Troxel holds the 16th position to anchor the provisional field.

We've got two more sessions tomorrow. There's still lots of action to come so please stop back by for all the latest.
