Westcott Takes Hemi Challenge While Coughlin Wins Shootout

HEBRON, Ohio -- Charlie Westcott of Parma, Mich. , took home the $5,000 purse at the Mopar Hemi Super Stock Challenge today at the NHRA JEGS Northern SPORTSnationals at National Trail Raceway. Westcott piloted his hemi powered vehicle to the victory with a time of 8.680 seconds over Larry Woo who fouled with a red light start handing the win over to Westcott.

Jon Clark, Manager of Mopar Performance said he is always impressed at the level of competition and the great attitude the competitors in the Hemi Super Stock Challenge bring to the table day in and day out.

In the JEGS Top Dragster Shootout John Coughlin was not to be outdone at his own event as he powered his JEGS dragster to the win. In the winner's circle, John was in high spirits as he expressed his great excitement in receiving his first photo check, it didn't hurt that the check was made out to him for 3,000 dollars.

In other action Larry Morgan from Newark, Ohio, had the weekend off from the NHRA Powerade series and decided to make an appearance in Comp Eliminator. He piloted the car that was built for his son to drive to a time of 6.966 making him the No. 1 qualifier. Michael Volkman from Moon, Pa., took the top spot in Super Stock over Dave Layer of Dayton, Ohio, driving a '87 Camaro.

In the Stock Eliminator class, Rob Lloyd from Whitmore Lake, Mich., took the top spot with a time of 13.862 seconds. Beavercreek, Ohio, resident Greg Burba wheeled his '63 Corvette to the pole position in Top Sportsman with a time of 6.709 seconds. Tom Elliot from Brooks, Ohio, was only outdone by Anthony Bronge of Marengo, Ill., in Top Dragster who made a pass of 6.356 seconds at 218.76 mph.

Sunday's action kicks off with final eliminations at 8 a.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children 8-12 years old. National Trail Raceway is located at 2650 National Road SW in Hebron, Ohio; approximately 20 miles east of Columbus on old U.S. Highway 40, one mile north of Interstate 70 at the Kirkersville exit. From Columbus, take I-70 to Highway 158 north and follow the signs, or take I-70 to Highway 37 north to U.S. Highway 40 and follow the signs.
