Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By Dave Rowe

ENNIS, Texas - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 22nd annual O'Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 5.591/182.65, Now #17; Best prior run: 5.935/158.73, Was #19

12:45 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 84 degrees, relative humidity 46 percent, barometer 29.49 inches, adjusted altitude 2,334 feet, track temperature 116 degrees.

More problems for Hight. He was on a decent pass until just before half-track, then he strikes the tires and has to abort the run.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.923/309.70, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.648/198.00, Was #18
Right Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 5.810/186.77, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.911/311.41, Was #15

Not sure what happened to Toliver here. He gets to half-track, then the car noses over. Densham makes a clean run and he gets in the show but he is on the bump.

Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 4.907/305.15, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.673/185.38, Was #18
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 10.356/71.88, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.888/308.85, Was #14

Bartone gets about 300 feet out and goes up in smoke. Johnson was skating around all over the track near the end of the run but he hangs on to get in the show, bumping out Densham in the process. Jerry Toliver is on the bump spot at 4.911.

Left Lane: Scott Kalitta Runs 5.271/265.38, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.326/200.41, Was #18
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 6.197/141.06, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.884/316.82, Was #12

A couple of ugly runs, both starts hazing the tires at half-track, Capps backs off the throttle, Kalitta pedals trying to get in the show.

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 5.014/283.55, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.884/291.63, Was #13
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.990/269.56, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.866/295.72, Was #9

A pretty good side-by-side, both go down the groove with full pulls.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.860/317.34, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.882/303.09, Was #11
Right Lane: Kenny Bernstein Runs 5.253/212.73, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.840/314.31, Was #6

WOW!!! An impressive run for Pedregon here in the heat. He makes the quickest pass of the session so far and moves up a few notches to the eighth spot. Bernstein has traction problems late in the run and has to click it off.

Right Lane: Ashley Force Runs 4.952/303.43, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.818/314.53, Was #5

Force was on a good run then started mixing up cylinders about 1100 feet out and slowed.

Left Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.914/315.86, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.863/307.72, Was #9
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.930/301.60, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.808/294.37, Was #4

A couple of good solid runs here in the heat. Both right down the groove, not a hint of tire smoke.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.888/314.53, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.851/317.79, Was #7
Right Lane: John Force Runs 5.433/190.00, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.801/321.35, Was #3

Force was on a good pass, ahead of Beckman to half-track, then the car noses over and the engine goes silent, not sure why. Beckman makes a good run for the conditions and will stay in the seventh spot.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.956/310.55, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.788/320.36, Was #2
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.916/305.29, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.787/318.17, Was #1

A couple of good solid runs, both right down Broadway in the heat of the day.
