GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Phase two of the multi-million-dollar, multi-phase renovation project at Gainesville Raceway is underway, with the new race control tower and media center quickly taking shape.

Fans, media and personnel should expect to see the new facility - complete with a state-of-the-art media center and 360-degree race control center on the top floor - in March, at the popular 39th annual ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals.

New grandstand suites were already in place for this year's event, as were permanent grandstands on the spectator side (north side) of the track, as part of the multi-phase project that will eventually overhaul and update the entire track.

Gainesville Raceway, located near the University of Florida campus in north-central section of the state, opened in 1969 and held its first Gatornationals event in 1970. Long considered one of the fastest tracks on the NHRA circuit, it was from this legendary launch point that drivers clocked the first 260-, 270- and 300-mph Top Fuel runs. It remains one of the fastest tracks on the circuit today.
