Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 47th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Alan Bradshaw Runs 4.706/304.60, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.552/321.04, Was #10
Right Lane: Steven Chrisman Runs 13.875/82.87, Now #19; Best prior run: 5.116/243.99, Was #19

1:13 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 30 percent, barometer 29.11 inches, adjusted altitude 2,146 feet, track temperature 87 degrees.

Just a reminder... The run order for this round is based on last rounds times, not the qualifying order. Mike Strasburg is on the bump spot at 4.709. Bradshaw had a great pass in round one and this time he has a nice .877 sixty foot time, but he goes about 1500 feet getting to the finish line. The car drives to the center line near mid-track and he has to work it all the rest of the way down the track to keep it in the lane. Chrisman strikes the tires at the hit and clicks it off.

Left Lane: Joe Hartley Runs 4.647/283.07, Now #14; Best prior run: 10.025/84.84, Was #20
Right Lane: Doug Foley Runs 7.096/109.18, Now #19; Best prior run: 4.905/216.24, Was #18

Foley has a .866 sixty foot time and then strikes the tires. Hartley has a nice 1000 foot pass and has "stuff" out the pipes at the top end. Good enough to move into the field off the bump spot! Clay Millican is now on the bump spot at 4.679.

Left Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 4.516/329.75, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.533/324.28, Was #8
Right Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.530/334.07, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.674/317.05, Was #15

A great side by side pass for both cars and McClenathan runs a big MPH to boot. Sweet!

Whit Bazemore's incremental times: 60ft-0.859 sec., 330ft-2.162, 660ft-3.076/274.27mph, 1,000ft-3.847
Cory McClenathan's incremental times: 60ft-0.870 sec., 330ft-2.188, 660ft-3.098/277.43mph, 1,000ft-3.866

Left Lane: Mike Strasburg Runs 11.533/82.80, Now #18; Best prior run: 4.709/291.26, Was #17
Right Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 4.556/322.65, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.729/254.28, Was #18

Strasburg smokes the tires at the hit. Vandergriff ducks a major bullet after the finish line. When the chutes came out and the weight transferred to the front wheels, the left wheel started to wobble and the car made a big move across the center line into the left lane. Vandergriff horsed it back into his lane and then watched the wheel fly off the car and roll all the way down the track and into the sand trap. He slowed the car and stopped it straight on the track without any more drama.

Oh, yah... He picked up six spots on the ladder to take over the current #12 spot.

Left Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 5.665/164.19, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.566/318.09, Was #14
Right Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.577/327.43, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.679/315.56, Was #17

1:30 p.m. Joe Hartley is on the bump spot at 4.647. Millican shows us how with a great leave and motors on down the track into the #15 spot. We are told that we are now one spot away from a record TF field. Herbert has problems and slows early.

Left Lane: Hillary Will Runs 4.574/325.30, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.561/320.28, Was #13
Right Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 9.868/78.31, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.494/331.61, Was #2

Bernstein has traction problems early and lifts. Will makes another clean pass to stay #13.

Left Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 9.527/77.78, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.548/329.34, Was #10
Right Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 5.244/181.98, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.630/302.75, Was #16

Troxel strikes the tires before the 330 lights and Lucas can't get much further. No record field this session! He'll stay on the bump.

Left Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 4.500/325.77, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.515/320.43, Was #6
Right Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 4.530/328.54, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.504/327.59, Was #5

Todd pushes Dixon back a spot with another consistent low fifty pass. That's six passes quicker than 4.53 including testing runs. Dixon's car is not slouch either, with a clean pass too.

Left Lane: David Grubnic Runs 10.106/73.27, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.517/327.35, Was #8
Right Lane: Rod Fuller Runs 4.481/327.27, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.497/329.34, Was #4

WOW!! Say Hi to your new number one qualifier. Who needs a mono strut wing? Three great pass for Fuller this weekend. Grubnic is slightly quicker in sixty feet, but strikes the tires before the 330 lights.

Rod Fuller's incremental times: 60ft-0.861 sec., 330ft-2.147, 660ft-3.049/279.56mph, 1,000ft-3.811

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 9.533/81.51, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.495/323.50, Was #4
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 4.485/320.58, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.483/328.30, Was #2

In almost a repeat of the prior pair, Schumacher runs another "forty", but the engine isn't as happy on the top end, so he'll stay #2 for now. His 3.811 time at 1000ft matches Fuller, but lots of "stuff" after that. Kalitta, like Grubnic, was slightly quicker in 60feet and then smoked the tires

1:50 p.m. Rod Fuller in the number one spot at 4.481 and Morgan Lucas is on the bump spot at 4.630.
