Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 47th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Winternationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Arley Langlo No Time, Now #22; No Prior Run

3:06 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 69 degrees, relative humidity 30 percent, barometer 29.14 inches, adjusted altitude 1,752 feet, track temperature 81 degrees.

Not sure what happened, but Langlo's car set behind the burnout box while the Safety Safari did their normal dusting and cleaning. Once that was done, the crew pushed the dragster away without trying to start the engine. Weird?

Left Lane: Doug Foley Runs 4.905/216.24, Now #16; Best prior run: 10.668/76.59, Was #18
Right Lane: Hillary Will Runs 4.561/320.28, Now #9; Best prior run: 12.386/82.06, Was #20

Steven Chrisman is on the bump spot at 5.116. Both cars couldn't get off the line yesterday, but today is much better. Will makes a straight and clean pass into the current #9 spot. Foley was right behind her to near mid-track, where the car made a hard move towards the center line. He drove it back in the lane, but was losing cylinders.

Left Lane: Steven Chrisman Runs 18.411/66.22, Now #19; Best prior run: 5.116/243.99, Was #18
Right Lane: David Grubnic Runs 4.517/327.35, Now #7; Best prior run: 10.935/77.34, Was #20

Doug Foley is on the bump spot at 4.905. Chrisman's tires go up in smoke hard at the hit. Grubnic finds the combination and hammers out a clean pass into the current top half of the field.

Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 4.630/302.75, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.084/198.93, Was #18
Right Lane: Joe Hartley Runs 10.025/84.84, Now #20; Best prior run: 10.355/84.75, Was #20

A couple of good passes and now Doug Herbert is on the bump spot at 4.790. It was expensive, as the engine is eating itself up by mid-track. There is enough left at the lights to move him into the field for now. Hartley strikes the tires and slows.

Left Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 4.729/254.28, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.730/282.60, Was #16
Right Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 4.566/318.09, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.790/268.22, Was #17

Bob Vandergriff is now on the bump spot at 4.730. Lots of fire from Vandergriff's engine at mid-track and he stops the UPS dragster on the track before the turn out. Herbert's day improves considerably, as he makes a strong pass into the field. Looked like pushed gaskets for him too, but it keeps running most of the way down the track.

3:19 p.m.

Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.717/303.64, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.679/315.56, Was #15
Right Lane: Mike Strasburg Runs 4.762/275.51, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.709/291.26, Was #16

3:45 p.m. Lots of "grease sweep" in the left lane from mid-track until Vandergriff's engine ran out of oil! Mike Strasburg is on the bump spot at 4.709. No joy for either driver with lots of weird header flames and dropped cylinders. Both cars with a lot of smoke from the pipes in the lights.

Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.812/226.01, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.674/317.05, Was #14
Right Lane: Melanie Troxel Runs 4.548/329.34, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.632/322.50, Was #13

All the bumping is done for this session. Both cars leave well and run side by side. McClenanathan may have lot a belt, as the car slows abruptly just after mid-track. Troxel Makes a full pull and move four positions up the ladder

Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 4.524/325.45, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.504/327.59, Was #5
Right Lane: Alan Bradshaw Runs 10.426/77.19, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.552/321.04, Was #10

Two solid back to back runs for the Skytel Team. Bradshaw is right behind him until the 330 lights and he clicks it off.

Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 4.483/328.30, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.502/324.20, Was #4
Right Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 4.980/210.37, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.533/324.28, Was #8

Both cars hunt themselves, but the Army car definitely had a longer fuze! Stuff on the track in Bazemore's lane. Schumacher's car isn't the quickest in sixty feet, but it runs strong enough on the top end to take over the top spot for now. Lots of Valvoline on the ground.... again, after a strong half track pass. Tony Schumacher's incremental times: 60ft-0.857 sec., 330ft-2.134, 660ft-3.039/278.40mph, 1,000ft-3.810
Whit Bazemore's incremental times: 60ft-0.883 sec., 330ft-2.209, 660ft-3.159/260.36mph, 1,000ft-4.021

Left Lane: Rod Fuller Runs 4.520/327.43, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.497/329.34, Was #4
Right Lane: J.R. Todd Runs 4.532/317.42, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.515/320.43, Was #6

Correction! Oil in both lanes from mid-track to past the finish line

4:21 p.m. Two nice side by side passes, but no improvements. Todd used a lot of racetrack on the top end and it may have cost him a little ET and MPH.

Left Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 4.630/297.68, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.494/331.61, Was #2
Right Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.500/328.46, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.495/323.50, Was #3

Last two cars in a very long session. Nice pass for Kalitta, as he runs almost an identical ET with a better MPH. Bernstein's' engine was not up to the stress and he has to watch Kalitta pull steadily away after mid-track.

4:29 p.m. Schumacher in the number one spot with a strong 4.483 and Mike Strasburg on the bump spot at 4.709.
